What do most people use to clean the leather on the Flexsteel chairs?
The leather on mine needs to be cleaned, but I don't want to use something that will damage it, or leave an undesirable odor. One of the suggestions I have had is to use a moisturizing soap like Dove, and wipe dry afterward. Any suggestions? Gardner 78FC33 |

Hi Gardner,
I sell & personally use this product (link below) for all leather products. It's 303 Protectant. It's great for dashboards, seats, plastics, etc. Also we use it on vinyls. Many RV stores carry it or you can order it on line. Congrats again on your new Bird. I know you will enjoy it immensely. http://www.303products.com/main.php Terry Neal Bozeman, MT 82PT40 74FC34 Gardner Yeaw wrote: > What do most people use to clean the leather on the Flexsteel chairs? > The leather on mine needs to be cleaned, but I don't want to use > something that will damage it, or leave an undesirable odor. Terry,
Thanks, I will look into it. I see you are a 2 bird man. I am having a lot of fun with my new Bird. My wife, who only a couple of months ago said' over my dead body', has taken as keen interest in it. She is already working out where to put things like cloths, laundry, trash, etc. I am still very wet behind the ears, but my early education in auto mechanics and later in electronics gives me the confidence that I can figure the systems out and keep it running for the most part. Also, the previous owner didn't skimp on the repairs, so I believe I have a pretty mechanically solid bus (for a 28 year old bus that is). I have an old friend that lives in Bozeman, he is quite a character. His name is Raleigh Heydon, ever run into him? Evening Gardner,
No, I haven't met your friend Raleigh but would like to. Sounds like a great person. You will find so many helpful people in this Bluebird bunch all over the US & Canada. My wife was not too enthralled with the 2nd Bird purchase (PT40) but after actually spending a couple of hours in it, she too was figuring out what needed to be changed (she watches HGTV a LOT) & what to put where. Sounds like you found a good one so learn, use and enjoy it. We are in the process of a complete remodel & repaint on the PT40 so I have been working on info to post in an album one of these days or nights. What you think is leather is really vinyl (paint). The leather is
sprayed with a vinyl paint to color and protect the leather on most leather seating (including the Flexsteel stuff). Your butt never touches leather. I use a commercial leather cleaner, which usually dries out the leather (where the surface is cracked, real leather is exposed). After it is clean and completely dry a conditioner should be used, pick your favorite from Mink Oil to Lexol conditioner, you need to quench the leather at these cracks so that it flexes instead of cracking deeper. - Jeff Miller in Holland, MI --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Gardner Yeaw" wrote: > > What do most people use to clean the leather on the Flexsteel chairs? > The leather on mine needs to be cleaned, but I don't want to use > something that will damage it, or leave an undesirable odor. Terry,
If you spent time in the local watering holes you would most likely have run into Raleigh. I was out in Bozeman with my then future wife close to 30 years ago. It was a fun trip in an Econoline van. We went to Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Bozeman and other stops along the way. With some luck we can relive those days and add a few more memories in the Bluebird. I know most people think I am nuts, but somehow there is a wonderful feeling when I enter the coach and think about the history that it has. I was lucky that the later owners kept records and put them in the ' Blue Box' for posterity. It has been enlightening to read over the trip data and service history. I'm having a ball and I haven't even spent the night in it yet! Exactly as Jeff said, the terms used by the leather industry can be,
and are probably meant to be, confusing. Quote "The most confusing term used within the leather industry is the term 'top grain'. Ironically, 'top grain' is the definition generally used when the grain is not genuine; when, in fact, the real grain has been taken away and an imitation grain embossed into the leather" (or a vinyl applied).<Snip> "Although many finish applications are administered for purposes other than altering or masking the surface of the leather, all applied opaque finishes and airtight surface sealants should be held suspect. Genuine, natural, unpigmented and unplasticized leather will breathe and ventilate, thus wicking away body heat. If upholstery leather is able to breathe, it can absorb moisture, be nourished, and remain soft and pliable. If the surface of the leather has been plasticized, as is the case for most automobile upholstery, the leather cannot breathe and may become stiff and boardy."
