3208 boost
I recently installed a new 3208 250 HP in my 82 FC. I am currently
getting 10 psi of boost after turning up the fuel to boost pressure
ration on the fuel pump. I still think the engine is not putting out
and was wondering what boost pressure other owners are getting for max
boost pressure on the 250 HP. Currently the coach is not sending cat
black smoke out, and it is kind of nice not having people look at me
like I just cut down the rain forest.

Any input would be appreciated including tricks to max out the power.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
I assume you didn't do the upgrade in your back yard, so what does
the outfit that installed it have to say? I would expect it was
pretty expensive to do the upgrade, so I would hope they would do it
right, or correct any deficiencies.

Talk to Mike Hohnstein
that grumpy old fart has probably done more to the 3208 than anyone on
this forum and he is continually trying to coax more power out of his
cats. he is the most knowledgable guy I know on the subject of 3208

factory specs.

Break it in nicely first.

My 250s developed around 1bar/15psi at full-chat on a good climb with
stock settings. If you have to make smoke to get this boost, you're
overfueling, shouldn't be necessary.

Are you getting enough air and fuel? Also, your coach doesn't have an
electric fuel pump at the tank stock, might be a good idea to add one
now.

Jim,
I also have a 82 fc 35' and I am considering putting in a 3208 250
hp along with a telma drive line retarder. I live in Southern Cal.
Lake Arrowhead. May I ask where and who installed your 3208 250 hp
and approx cost? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Jim, with the hill you have to run up and down, the best modification
to make is a ForSale sign. Tannys and cooling systems changed with
hp increases and the drivline retarder may not be matched for
driveline design. You would best ask someone with a 250hp rig to
run up and down that hill before you make any mods. That would give
you a feel of the added power and best case result. I love the
classic looks of the 82-35, and it would be nice if you were able to
make it powerfull enough to be safe on your hill.

I've got an 82 FC 35 to which a Thelma retarder has been retrofitted
(in 84). I like it a lot. It was not cheap. By memory, I think the
cost was around $5k based on the paperwork in the Bluebox. In steep
terrain it is hard to beat.
It also has a turbo retrofitted to a 210hp NA. Since I have only
driven it with the turbo, and never driven either a 210na or a 'real'
250hp turbo I can't help with the performance comparison. I can say
however, that were I required to climb 2 or 3k' every day in the
coach, I would not be satsified. I am quite happy on flat roads.
If my NA (with aftermarket turbo) were to fail, I would probably
install a 250hp turbo which would probably also require changes in the
transmission and rear end. However, I'm of the opinion that removing
a 210hp NA and replacing it with a 250hp turbo at a cost of (??$15K)
would not produce enough of a performance difference to justify the
expense. It cost the original owner of my coach about $5k to add the
turbo. From the little remaining evidence of his satsifaction with
the choice, I'm making an educated guess that he was not impressed.
