Cat Oil filters

When we bought our 88 FC it came with 2 spare oil filters 1R0713. They
were very impresive: large heavy can that is one piece, die cast
threaded top instead of formed sheet metal. They were expensive,
about $13.00 Canadian. Today I went to my Cat dealer to get 6 filters.
Surprise they are now just over $6.00. However when he brought me the
filters they are just like any Wix or Baldwin filter. Crimped top,
shorter and lighter. I suspect that they are simply a brand "x" and
are not made by Cat. What a disappointment! I have emailed Cat to get
more info on this change.

Bruce,

I believe that Cat Dealers are independently owned.
It may be possible that they supply other brands of consumable
items, The Original filter was Cat part # 9N6007, this crosses to
Cat # 1R-0714, this is the big Cat Yellow filter that I use.
About $10.00 US.

I was changing my oil today & found I was out of filters so I went to the
Truck Garage near me to get some. What I was using is some that the past owner
gave me when I bought the coach. Same no on the new ones as the old ones but
the new are about 1/2 inch shorter & they have a different top where it
screws on.The old one had heaver top that
with different holes & about a 1/2 more of threads. The construction of the
old one was much better looking that the new one. It even had a different
gasket on the top which might seal better as I always got a few drips from the
old ones. Does any know how long it has been since they cheapened them? The
no was 1R-0714 for 3208 300 hp

Curt Do you think there is a shelf life on things like that . I though as
long sa they are in sealed boxes they would still be good. If that is true
it would not bbe good to buy them buy the case unless you put a lot of miles
on. I did find out there is a shelf life on the strips to test you anti freeze
so you shouldn't buy a big box of them.

of my own. As with my experience, these old Birds when purchased, some
have a few to a large supply of oil, air, diesel fuel filters, and other
parts. Should we expect to use these filters without problems. Do they
age out like other items?

of my own. As with my experience, these old Birds when purchased, some
have a few to a large supply of oil, air, diesel fuel filters, and other
parts. Should we expect to use these filters without problems. Do they
age out like other items?

Curt the 1985 PT 40 that I bought in March is full of parts. A case
of racor filters for the perkins diesel, hoses and belts for the
6V92TA, 3 new air bags, oil filters for the 6V92TA, extra side
lights, a brand new Montz 12X wrench, boxes and boxes of stuff packed
in the bays. I am sure going to use them. They dont deteriorate with age.

Don,
I have no idea about the filter shelf life, but I'm interested in
learning about their shelf life. I'll ask my local truck parts store, if
I can remember to do that. I'm selling my 1976 Jeep CJ7 and I have way
too many oil filters for it, about 15 or 20 years on the shelf...not
sure if that is a benefit to perspective buyers.

Yup, bought a large bottle of the anti freeze strips, gave away most of
them, used very few, and tossed out the rest. Now I need to buy some
that are date compliance based on date on the bottle/package.

filters were a real piece of engineering: one piece can, die cast
threads, o ring, etc. Cat no longer makes their own filters for the
3208 and some other legacy engines. I examined the new filter and it
sure looks like a Wix. Of course the price has not dropped!!
