air leak/vacuum generator leak

I investiagted my air leak a little more. It does appear to be the
vacuum generator mounted on the bottom of an air manifold behind the
bumper. Air is coming out of the one of the fittings that has never
had a hose on it. When I plug that fitting, the air must backfeed
thru the cruise control vacuum system because it blows the hose off
the vacuum canister on the engine. Do I need to replace the vacuum
generator (if that is what it is)? If so, where would I purchase a
replacement?

My 81 does the same thing. After shutting off the engine, it will make a air
leak sound for a little while, that changes when the lines are moved. It has
been awhile since I have looked at it, but if memory serves- I have the same
device, with a leaking sound coming from a empty port as well. I will be
monitoring this post for a repair and or replacement for the device. Let me
know of your progress.

a vacuum leak in the cruise control system. This makes sense. My next
test will be to remove the input vacuum line from the cruise control,
plug it and see if it stops the air leak.

I am new to all the details on the bluebirds, but my cruise stopped
working out of the blue going down the road. what is this vacumm generator
and is it's sole purpose to run the cruise?

I had a similar air leak just after I purchased our '81 FC in 2000. AS
mentioned before, it was the cruise control vacuum generator. After replacing
it all was well in that area. I tried capping the leaking port but, it just
blew the cap off. That's when I knew I needed help. I was just starting out
then and had a lot to learn, still do.

Describe what the unit looks like, name(s), number(s), etc. Send me a
digital picture, 2, or 3. When I overhauled the jeep I wanted the cruise
control to work. I recall someone in Texas that would rebuild the unit.
I did not use his facility as I located a never used identical unit, free.

Our previous 1974 Bird had a vacuum cruise control unit. It looked like
the one on the Jeep. To get it to work I replaced ALL the vacuum lines,
the bellows, removed the electrical connections, twisted the contact
blades slightly (to tightened them in their sockets) and plugging them
back in, unit worked perfect.

If your unit has a constant vacuum leak, the unit my need the attention
stated above, rebuilding, or replacing.

Send me information. If the unit is what I'm thinking it is, I'll do my
best to locate that outfit in Texas.

Even though my cruise control vacuum sphere was not holding vacuum
very well, I decided the problem was the vacuum generator since even
plugging the vaccum hose to the cruise control did not stop the air
leak. It has no part numbers or name on it. I dissasembled it. It
has a press fitted cover on the bottom which holds a rubber membrane,
a spring, and a plastic needle valve that goes up into the body. It
is an extremely simple device. I'm thinking that the needle valve
must have been sticking. I damaged the rubber membrane under the cap
when I removed it so I can't just reassemble it. I may just fabricate
a replacement membrane (perhaps from a nitrile glove) and reassemble it.
The reason I think the needle valve was sticking was that I could blow
in the pressure side and it would leak prior to dissasembly. If I
push the needle valve manually into the body, it holds air. I'll call
Blueburd on Monday to see if they can direct me to a mfg. I'll also
check out the source Tom posted. I noticed they rebuild the cruise
control components. Do they also supply the vacuum generator? I
looked on the air system diagrams and could not see the part. I also
could not find it in the Bluebird parts book I have.

There is a second line (vacuum?) attached to the generator in addition
to the one that goes to the cruise control sphere. Does anyone know
the purpose of the second hose? I'm thinking I could just plug the
fitting and get by without the vacuum generator until I get a
replacement if that second line does not operate a crucial component.

There are two vacuum (?) hoses coming off the generator. One goes to
the cruise, the other to ???. The air system schematics that came
with my coach don't show any of that circuit as far as I can see.
Perhaps the second hose is a return line to catch the compressed air
after it produces a vacuum?
I'm guessing it's sole pupose is for the cruise control, replacing the
electric vacuum pump that was the source of vacuum in earlier years.
You should be able to tell if yours is working by testing the input
vacuum line into the vacuum canister on the top left of the engine.
If you have enough vacuum there, that's not your problem.
