I'm back to my curb side bay project. The bay will have a 12V radio/CD player, a
110V TV drawing 45 watts, and a 110V DVD player drawing 12 watts. The MAXX SST 400 inverter by Victor should provide plenty of power to the TV and DVD player. It can be plugged into the bay cigarette lighter if the continuous load is below 150 watts. The cost is less than $40.00. Does anyone have experience with the Victor line of inverters? This is not really relevant to your post, however, in the June/July issue of Home Power Magazine is a great article about modifying and adding to an RV's ability to boondock. Hope some of you old pros will help. I am pretty much satisfied with my
generator and old charger set up, but have been thinking of getting a 2000 0r 4000 watt inverter and buying a 12 volt battery and placing both in the driver side rear compartment and hooking it to the cheater with a 110 connection and using it for quiet time. Question one-would this hook up provide power to all connections in coach(understanding one could not use more than unit provides). Question two-Say you hook up this way and use the full power. Just my opinion Maury but this was what I was going to do if I still
had my 1982 FC35 which I sold. I believe the addition of a 3 stage charger/inverter is one of the best upgrades you can do. But again in my opinion you need to do it right. I was going to relocate the charger/inverter a Heart 2500 to the passenger side front compartment. That will give you the very best setup since the batteries and charger/inverter are close together. Run 10/2 wire from the main power panel in the rear closet to power the charger portion and another 10/2 cable from the inverter to a sub panel located below the main power panel. Then 4/0 cables from the charger to the batteries. I connected all of the interior wall receptacles and the microwave to the subpanel. To really get the most out of the batteries, charger/inverter you need a link 1000 to monitor everything concerning 12VDC in the coach. The Link 1000 will allow you to monitor the voltage and current out of the alternator, monitor the current and voltage out of the generator if its running, the current draw from the batteries and the state of charge of the batteries. To me that really gets rid of a lot of guessing. You can set the parameters you wish for the batteries, when you want to the link 1000 to shut off at which point you still have enough batteries to start the engine. Remember the generator battery is a stand alone system and is your back up if everything else wont work. You can still start the generator up and recharge the batteries so in less then a minute you can start the engine. Just a suggestion but in my mind how it should be done. Maury,
I don't believe you would be happy with what you propose to do, here's why. Following are some electrical considerations: You do not get something for nothing changing from a DC to an AC current, matter of fact you loose in the loss of efficiency of voltage conversion. Maybe 10-15% for a good unit. Consider the perfect world with no loss. Power (watts) is equivelant to voltage (V) times current (A). For ease in calculating let's say the AC voltage is 125 and the DC voltage is 12.5. To obtain 1 Amp @ 125VAC (125 Watts), a perfect transfer from a 12.5 VDC battery source would have to deliver 10 Amps, 1250 Watts-100 Amps, 2500 Watts-200 Amps. At 100 Amps even the slighest resistance to the inverter will reduce the available voltage in the transfer. Batteries are rated in Amp Hours, 1 Amp x 1 Hour=1 Amp Hour You can see that 1250 watts is sucking the battery hard and this is why it is necessary to have a battery bank capable of delivering a lot of current. Question ---- I was wandering if running an inverter when on the road to

Thanks Greg That is what I wanted to know. I just didn't want to over
work the alternator. Until my 1500W boat anchor quits that is what I will use. Don 89 SP 36' Butler, PA My 94 heart inverter runs off the batteries. charging batteries and using batteries are independent. the alternator is putting out more amps than a 2800 watt inverter can use. I had a rig with one ac setup to run off the inverter for road trips. I thought about setting my 94 pt up that way but kinda like to exersize the genset fully loaded with all ac's running when I have the chance to. For the most part I use the inverter. I am doing a 'inverter use test' now to prepare for Quartzsite drycamp rally. Hi Shane Thanks for the nice picture of your coach. Looks like you
found a good one. I have never used my ice maker while on the road & that is what I wanted to know. If you don't run it at night it will not run water out on the floor? I have hardwood in that area. We are not going to AZ this winter& we were leaving for FL in the morning but I found a oil leak in the Jeep that I'm going to have checked out first. We are going to save the big trip to the north west for next summer. Are you still going to AZ ? During the day, it seems to draw no more power than all of the lights do at night. I think that the draw is usually around 65 amps when the ice maker is on. I do not leave the ice maker on when I park for the night. Usually, it has no problem staying cold for a few hours while we're sleeping. Are you going to AZ this winter??
