Because I'm concerned with the price of fuel and towing a toad behind
me, I was wondering what difference their is from say towing a rig that
maybe weighs in at 2,000lbs and 4,000 lbs are far as milage?Jon

From the experience of towing ranging from a 4-down Geo Tracker
(3,000lb?) to a 4-up BMW (total ~7,000lbs) I saw less than 1mpg
difference, hard to tell as I seldom repeated the same trip/terrain.

Well, when you think about it. Look at the weight of the towing rig and the
percentage of weight increase. Not really much. Say its 10% and you'd lose 10%
mps. ok, so were doing good and got 10mgp without toad, now we get 9. Don't see
where this would be a concern for those that don't put at least 100,000 miles a
year on. Now befor you all start yelling. those were just off the head easy #'s
to get on thinking about why should this be a concern.

Mark, 80FC35, ouch 7 mpg getting ready for 6 when start pulling trailer. But
its good milage for a house with attached garage. Smile

ps. grrrrrrrrr, can post pick of nice smiley

Mark,
Toad weight is not that important.....we tow over 6k lb and don't
even notice it's there....The single largest factor in mileage is speed.
We noticed a marked increase in mileage when keeping our speed at 55 during
our last trip through the south...When we hit the high plains
heading for the desert, we jacked up the speed a bit and saw our mileage
plummet. The magic speed for us was 60. And Jeff, our bird does
a real nice and easy 85 at 2200 rpm.... which I don't do often. I can
thank the California Highway Patrol for doing an involuntary speedometer
check on our coach.... our speedo is dead on.

In my reckless intuition, wind direction and how fast one drives are bigger
impacts on mileage than the weight in tow, espcially a two thousand pound
difference.

Jon,

The convenience of having a fuel efficient towed vehicle far
outweighs the loss of 1 mpg or so incurred in pulling it. Day trips
or even a trip to the grocery store are much easier than trying to
find suitable parking for a 'Bird. I still don't follow the logic of
towing a fifth wheel with an 8 mpg dually and then having to
shepherd a gas guzzler thru traffic just to score some grub. But,
I'm preaching to the choir here!

Most states don't require auxilliary brakes on trailers or towed
vehicles under 3,000#. Your state may be one of the few that has a
lower limit. Check with your insurance agent and your local DMV or
State Highway Patrol to verify your states requirements. Happy
towing!

Yeah, remember the saying that figures don't lie, but liers can figure!!
Consider that you get a 1¢ or 2¢ a gallon discount at Brand X station,
but you have to drive 8 or 10 miles extra to get there.. How many
gallons would you have you have to buy to make out..
BTW, towing my CJ, my 391 rig will get 5.5mpg, (GPS).
As comparison, our old Toyota Cl. C always stayed in the 12mpg range.

Hi Blair, hope you've been able to get a few things of your plate by now. I was
not concerned with this issue. I'm just suprised that people that get a vehicle
that on a good day MAY if their lucky get 10 mpg, not gonna drive a 100,000+
miles a year worry bout milage. Anyway, I know that you have vast knowledge with
back up camera set ups. Would you have any suggestions for me where I want a
camera on back of my trailer to see behide it and 2nd camera on back of bird to
use while hooking up trailer? I'm thinking the RV camera doesn't need to be
quite as good of quality as it will basically only be used for hooking up
trailer and maybe some for backing into spots without trailer. But definatly
think a good wide angle for rear of trailer and if possible it would be wireless
for ease of instalation.
