update power problem observations
okay, first off, I am confused about electricity. There are four big
wires a big red one that goes to one of the 50 amp breakers, a black one that goes to the other, a white that goes to the bar with all the other little white ones and a green that goes to the other side with all the bare copper ones. I checked with my test light that lights for 110 and another light for 220, and when i touched the place where the red wire connects to the breaker and either the green or white bar it reads 110. when i do the same with the black wire on the other 50 amp breaker the same happens. I took the little plastic thing that holds the two 50 amp breakers together off and when i flip the top one the plugs that have lamps plugged into them go out, when I flip the other one the heater in the bathroom goes off. So both are doing something. Also, the gauges in the upper dash labeled ac voltage are reading:leg 1 120, leg 2 120. the gauges labeled ac amperage leg 1 reads zero and leg 2 reads 10. I looked for gfi plugs and found none. should I take the switch apart that I use to select genarator 30 or 50 amp? I tried to work it with the genarator and the same problem was there. NO do not pull that switch apart. The guages you just talked about would not
have volts on them if the rotor switch is bad. Now I also have very low or no amps unless I am using a 110v item. remember your water heater is on one leg and the insta hot or eng block heater or 110v lighting will be on the other. BEFORE disassembly of any item turn on all of the 110v items to verify if the side has no draw. ALSO start your GEN and put it online. Again check all the 110v to see if there is a change. Robert,
If I follow what you described and what you tested, you are good to go in the circuit breaker panel. Removing the little plastic thing and flipping the breakers independently...tuning off the breakers should turn off those items connected to it...all seems good. Amperage registered on one leg and not the other...depends on the coach load demand and how the coach is wired. Very possible one leg would be zero while the other has a power demand on it. The reading of 110 & 120 volts in each leg tells me the legs are receiving power. Our '87 coach does not have GFIs and perhaps yours does not as well. Do not take the gen/shore switch apart until we hear more from others perhaps more familiar with doing so and testing same. My only other suggestion at this time is to unplug the shore cord, start the gen., be sure the switch is set to gen., reset all the breakers in the 110V control panel, and see what happens. Curt has a very good point here. I would not take a part anything else just yet. If you have power at the 50 amp breaker box, then everything up to there should be okay. I'm coming in late here. But what exactly is not working? Is the top switch
overhead switched on? (or maybe an 88 doesn't do it that way). Just some thoughts I haven't seen mentioned. I guess that wasn't very clear - I do mean the 3 air/heat switches above the
drivers head. The top one should be for the front of the coach. Sorry about that. I don't know if this could be it, but on our coach the bottom left breaker in the panel is a GFI breaker. If it is tripped (which is not always apparent, without cycling it) one of my legs will show nothing on the front gages. Robert, did you sell the coach yet? Curt may have stumbled on the
problem or a problem. 1- terms necessary to explain technical parts like " little plastic thingy" reveal that we may be giving advice that put you in danger. 2.- if you find a GFI receptical, someone may have changed some electrical wiring in the coach. 50HzBill often warns us that the coach is or is not grounded in a particular way.?????? and the factory wire grounding must be maintained. I would advise only flipping switches on and off and remember not to touch anything conductive. The inverter and generator produce the same type of deadly power that comes from Edison. Un plugging the bus from land power and using the other power sources does not protect or limit the risk of shock. This is the situation where the hire of a good RV tech and not a household electric tech would be a wise choice.
