Zip Dee Window Awnings
I have my work cut out for me this weekend. (Thanks Ralph!) But in
the mean time I need to get some info on Zip Dee awnings. One of the
small window awnings is broken. As in, it won't roll up on it's own.
There are no levers or anything so I assume it is a preset function.
Half of the rod that goes through the middle of the tube came out the
right side. Is it supposed to be one piece? And how do I rewind/re-
tension it?

Thanks

Try the Zip Dee website http://www.zipdeeinc.com/
Then click on Maintenance.
The is a pretty hefty loaded spring in the tube.

They are very helpful on the telephone.

Yeah, there is a lot of stored energy in them rascals. Tread real soft when
working with them, scary as a overhead garage door spring. I damn near broke my
arm once being careless with my awning.

Thanks for the advice. Provided the spring is not broken, is there a
process for re-winding them?

Keith, the spring is broken. Not a hard job. You will need to use pop
rivets and instructions will come with new sprint.

You need to replace the guts, a spring wrapped around the rod with caps on each
end . Contact Zip Dee they will ship the parts assembled in a tube. Parts cost
$50 from Zip Dee and takes about 1 hour to fix.

1) Remove awning from coach
2) Drill out 3 rivets
3) Remove the guts
4) Slide in the new piece, rod and end caps are assembled when they ship
5) Attach awning to tube with new rivets provided in kit
6) Attach awning and 1 arm to coach
7) Wind up spring and attach arm, mine took 3 turns

Something like 30 turns. The left arm, facing the awing is the energized
component. You turn the square solid portion of the arm, might be 33 turns, I
forget. Zipdee has good customer service and I have been satisfied with them.
After my sad experiencel, Zipdee sent me Ehrhardts RV, http://www.etstrailers.com they
did a good job and the cost was reasonable.

Thanks Bruce, I'm one of those "If I can't fix it, it ain't broke."
kind of guys... And I'm a cheapskate! But it looks like I'll have to
fork out the $50 and let this one go.... Thanks for the info...

Rule of thumb for Zip Dee awnings is: 1 turn per linear foot plus 5 turns

The front left awning has one of the springs either broken or disconnected.
Has anyone every had one of the mechanisms apart? How?
