On my way up north last month, had my propane tank filled. I have been
using one furnace since I left- the kitchen furnace puts out fumes,
that one is off. So for about 30 days have been running the front
furnace and checking my gauge. Last nite- furnace was putting out cold
air and gauge was down to zero- thats what it looked like. Added more
propane but it would only take 25 gallons. Wonder why it wouldn't take
more? Ernie-83PT40 in Montana- 2.59 a gallon here today- last month in

Maybe thats the point where it will only accept 25 gallons. Looks like my 1
furnace consumes a gallon per day.

Hi Ernie,

Try having your tank "Purged" before you get it filled next time.
It is my understanding that the tanks get residual air in them over
time and will not accept enough LP when you fill up. The other
problem could be a sticking float on your OPD. You can easily remove
the repair the contraption when the tank is empty next time.

Another test that you should run is to turn off the gas at the
tank and also at the master valve in the refrigerator compartment.
Then, a day later, turn the gas valve back on at the tank and listen
to see if any gas is flowing back into the hose. If you hear a rush
of gas, there is probably a leak somewhere. Good Luck!

the tanks on a bird are full at 80% capacity or volume of tank there
needs to be room for the liquid to vaporize to a gas
Burping should not be necessary there is a vent that should be opened
when filling

Hi Shane, how would you go about purging the tank? Ralph suggested a trouble

Hi Ernie,

The last few times that I stopped at the Flying Hook for LP,
they said that they no longer were opening the small valve to let
air escape as the tank gets filled. You should be able to go to any
propane dealer that fills tanks. They can purge (pull a vacuum) on
the tank and get most of the residual air removed. You could also do
it yourself if/when the tank is completely empty if you have access
to a machine that can evacuate an A/C system. You would just need to
get or make an adapter that would screw into the propane fill valve
to pull the vacuum.

They seem to be inconsistent. The Flying J in North Platt does not open the
valve, Oklahoma City does, El Paso does not, and Eloy does. Last time I was
in North Platt a couple of weeks ago they said they would not fill the tank
because of it's age until it was inspected. Went on down the road and
filled it in Oklahoma City. Any one else run into this?

Some filler folks get confused between up-right tanks and lay-down
tanks. My understanding is the lay-down (horizontal) tank does not need
the inspection.
