Tandem towing

This weekend, I observed a fleetwood discovery towing, in tandem, 2
suvs, 4 down.
Has anyone ever done that? He was stopped on top of Bozeman Pass and
was getting ready to go down a 6% grade. Personally, I felt that was a
situation that I would not be comfortable in.

It's also illegal in many states, including California. There's two
chances for a major ticket (1) dual trailers are only allowed with
semi-truck rigs (commercial class A license) and (2) over length
violation. Most states have length limits ranging from 55 to 70 feet.
With that combination of vehicles, it seems likely that there is a
length violation in most states.

I will observe that it is quite possible to travel some distance
without attracting the attention of the highway patrol... on my
maiden trip, home from near Dallas Tx, via Oklahoma, Kansas,
Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada into California. I had a "paper"
license plate that was only semi-visible in the front window of the
coach. I was only stopped by a trooper in Nevada -- who also admitted
he was primarily curious about what kind of RV it was...

Hey Ernie,

We should look at the bottom of the pass. May be some good parts
available on the road side? I personally would never pull two of
anything on a highway.

Ernie. It sounds like those suvs could arive at the scene, before the fleetwood.
They all look the same, going over the cliff. I'm modifying my 17 ft trailer, so
I can pull both my motorcycle and my Beamer with me. I stretched the tounge,
with heavy wall square tubing, so now it's 21 ft. I fabricated a ramp, that
extends over the tounge, for the bike. It all unbolts easily, and you can slide
the tounge back, to make it 17 ft again. I added a breakaway. I like the idea of
a tralier much better than 4 wheels on the ground, or even a tow dolly, Ever
try to back either one up? I know the downside may be being restricted on where
you can go, but after pricing what it takes to fit a vehicle for tow, I think
it's cheaper to trailer. You can buty a new tralier for around $1400.00, with
electric brakes, load it, and go!
