1992 WB40 Spare wire from front to back?
Is there a spare wire that runs from the front to the back of a 1992
WB40 that I can use for my brake controller? I have a US Gear D-Celerator brake system that needs one wire to tell the system in the toad to apply the brake, and another to keep the battery charged. I am not worried about the one for charging as I can grab that right off the back of the coach, but did not want to have to run a wire all the way from the front to the back if a spare already exists for that. 1992 WB40 Spare wire from front to back?
When I decided to pull a trailer with electric brakes, I noticed that
connections for that function were capped off at the connector. I contacted BB and was told that an extra wire was not pulled for that purpose. They suggested that I install a relay to apply the brakes. That did not make sense to me as the controller relies on inertia to apply power to the trailer. The faster the bus slows, the more power is applied to the trailer brake system. I ran a 10 guage multi strand wire from the front to the rear under the bus primarily following existing tubing and wiring. A broken fishing rod makes quick work through the tough spots. The controller power was obtained from the the lower load center to be activated when the ignition is turned on. I used a blade fuse for the system utilizing an open outlet factory installed for accessory additions. I tied the ground to the primary ground in the lower load center. It works fine. The job took about 3 hours. Michael, If you don't find a spare wire,
I would think you could run a Bosch type relay across or in parallel with the brake light. Then use the common/normaly open contacts to deliver what ever signal you wanted, ground or 12 volts. The relay would isolate the systems. bob janes, 87fc35, greenville, sc --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "mbrund" <mbrund@...> wrote: > > Is there a spare wire that runs from the front to the back of a 1992 > WB40 that I can use for my brake controller? > > I have a US Gear D-Celerator brake system that needs one wire to tell > the system in the toad to apply the brake, and another to keep the > battery charged. 1992 WB40 Spare wire from front to back?
If it was just the coach brake signal that I needed that would
work. However, the US Gear Unified Tow Brake system has a controller that sits on the dash of the coach and has a momentim switch that detects the coach is decelarating. When it detects that the coach is slowing and that the coach brake has been applied, it starts to send a signal to the toad brake system to apply the brakes at the same rate as the coach. So the US Gear is a progressive and proportional system, so I can not just tie into the brake signal as the signal from the controller increases in voltage as more brake is needed to control the brakes in the toad. I was hoping there was a spare wire or two like in my old coach that I could use without having to run one. But it is not looking that way. So guess I get to crawl under the coach this weekend and fix the genset hoses, and while there run the wire Michael Brundridge 1992 WB40 - newbie Georgetown, TX --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "one_dusty_hoot" > > Michael, If you don't find a spare wire, > I would think you could run a Bosch type > relay across or in parallel with the brake > light. 1992 WB40 Spare wire from front to back?
Leroy,
Thanks for that insight, the US Gear Unified Tow Brake is similar to a electic brake controller in that the Unified Tow Brake is a progressive and proportinal braking system with a controller that sits on the coach dash, and a controller that is located in the toad and tied to the relay that pulls down on the brake pedal and starts the add-on vaccum pump for the vaccum assisted brakes. The more it detects the coach is slowing from the inertia mech. in the controller, the more signal it sends to the toad. So I will have to do as you have and run another wire back there. I have not checked the 7-pin plug at the back of the coach to see if it supplies 12 volts (believe it is normally pin #4) to keep the toad battery charged. If not, I will need to put a relay in that is tied to the coach batteries and activated by a ignition switch signal to keep from discharging the batteries when the coach is not running. I don't have a battery on the trailer so I don't know what pin number would be
for charging the battery in the toad. I am confidant that you will need to hook that up also. I may have done an overkill with the 10 gauge wire but my thinking was it is 40 ft and I only wanted to do it once. <<>> I ran mine on the street side through the genset cooling compartment, used a few clamps under the bus and followed the wiring in the rear wheel well to get to the plug. 1992 WB40 Spare wire from front to back?
Well as luck would have it, I took the front nose panel off where
all the relays and fuses are and I saw two wires that where in convoluted tubing and has a hand written label that said 'run to back' I jumped under the coach out back and sure enough there they where. I ohmed them to verify and sure enough. So some kind sole before me had already done the hard work So I just need to hook it to the controller in the coach now. Also I needed to run 12 volt from the engine batteries to TOAD to charge the battery. I was having a hard time finding a wire in the engine bay that was only hot when the ignition was on so I could put it to a relay so the wire to the toad battery is only hot when the coach ignition was on. Then I looked up and remembered the rear coach ignition box, so I removed the screws and determined that the center post on one side of the front/off/rear switch is hot only when the front or rear ignition switch is on. So I tapped into that and ran it to the relay, so now I have a hot AUX going to the toad only when the ignition is on. --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "mbrund" <mbrund@...> wrote: > > Is there a spare wire that runs from the front to the back of a 1992 > WB40 that I can use for my brake controller? > > I have a US Gear D-Celerator brake system that needs one wire to tell > the system in the toad to apply the brake, and another to keep the > battery charged. Michael, the toad needs a ground that is common
to the coach for the aux 12 volts, otherwise no reference, no charging. bob janes, 87fc35, greenville, sc --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "mbrund" <mbrund@...> wrote: > > Well as luck would have it, I took the front nose panel off where > all the relays and fuses are and I saw two wires that where in > convoluted tubing and has a hand written label that said 'run to > back' I jumped under the coach out back and sure enough there they > where. Bob,
Isn't that what pin one is for on the standard RV plug wiring? To provide a common ground? Michael, there are pictures in the "Files" under 'RV Plug Wiring' that show all the connections if you are in need of such a diagram.
