Koni FSD Shocks
Folks,
Koni has developed the FSD (Frequency Selective Dampening) shocks for the 1998 to 2003 LXi. They won't be available for shipment till October, but you can place your order now to reserve a set. The first production run will be for 50 sets of shocks. The FSD is the shock that comes standard on the 450 and the 380. The benefits of the FSD can be found here: http://www.koni-na.com/fsd/index2.html No financial interest, David Brady '02 LXi, Smokey Va |

BlueBird is now using the new Koni FSD shocks on their new motor homes
(self adjusting), they are now available for older BlueBirds. Is there anyone that has installed these on an older coach and if so how do you like them? Are they available for both front and rear? I'm getting ready to replace the air bags and shocks on my coach, not sure if I want to do the job myself, thinking of taking it to Holland Motor Homes in San Diego and let them have at it. They will install the shocks and all air bags for $1062 plus parts. Robert Britton 87FC Hollister, California |

Jessie at BB confirmed that my original shocks can be tightened a
quarter-turn to cut down on the porpoising. I've heard it also has to do with running higher pressures in the tires, but I'd rather keep my tires up. Koni FSD Shocks
I have the new Koni FSD shocks on the rear of my 1980. When I
purchased new replacement Koni's at the RITV last October at the time the FSD's were only available for the rear. Its hard to say what the improvement is since the FSD's are on the rear and I now have new shocks all the way around. The difference in ride and driving was well beyond my expectations but who is to say how much of that is new technology on the rear or simply the fact that I replaced 27 year old original shocks. Either way I am more than pleased.... Koni FSD Shocks
Robert,
I replaced the air bags on the front of our coach back in 2000. It was quite a job and required dismantling part of the exhaust system to get to the left bags. Let us say, it was a character building experience. If you can get all that done by Holland for that price, I'd go for it unless you prefer to do your own work. Brad,
My experience has been that lower tire pressures lead to more porpoising and higher tire pressures provide less. I run 105 psi in our fronts and get a pretty good ride. There are some sections of highway that can still make it feel like a buckboard, but those are pretty rare. Some bridge sections with prestressed concrete beams that are bowed. Thanks for the response, Eric.
We're running 120, 110 and 105 PSI front to back. Tightening up the shocks is the main order of business. I also have an oil seal leaking on the left tag wheel. Koni FSD Shocks
Robert,
I just installed the FSD's on the rear of my LXi and the results are astonishing. The ride over the rough stuff is much smoother and the handling is more responsive. Now we have to put pressure on Koni to develop the FSD's for the front. I've been told by Justin at Koni that the fronts require a higher pressure rated FSD valve due to the 45 deg mounting angle of the shock (something like a 2:1 ratio of axle movement versus shock movement). Justin recommended adjusting the front shocks one turn from full soft. The extra control that the rear shocks provide helps iron out some of the porpoising up front. I found that if the front shocks are too stiff, the front end seems to fall into road when hitting bumps, adjusting one turn from full soft lets the tires follow the roadway. I also installed Crossfires and Centramatics. The Centramatics provide a noticeable improvement in smoothness - highly recommended (NFI). I run 105, 90, 85 tire psi front to back. My tag airbag pressure is 65 to 67psi. My weight is steer: 14.2K, drive: 22K, and tag: 11K. Koni FSD Shocks
David,
I just got my LXi a few weeks ago and noticed the porpoising was severe. After driving a Newell the past five years, I had forgotten about porpoising. And with the ISRI air seat, the vertical movement was even more magnified. With less then 37k miles, I'm sure I still have the original shocks, whatever they are. BB recommended tightening the front shocks a quarter turn at a time. I'm assuming the FSDs in the rear are firmer as well. I do run higher tire pressures..120, 110, 105. Is it your experience that simiply tightening the shocks does no good?
