wheel bearing oil bath
my bus has a broken shock on the front left and i have started to
replace both of them. i have ordered the koni adjustable shocks and
hope to get then in a few days. i have already removed both front tires
and removed the old shocks. the shocks on the bird were monroe gas 65's
and looked to be to small for that massive front end. it is my hope
that the bus will ride a lot better with the new shocks. while i have
the tires off i have also cleaned up the grease fittings and have lubed
the front end. this leads up to my question tonight. the wheel bearings
are in an oil bath and the oil level is low. can anyone tell me the
proper oil to use in the bearing. thanks to all for the knowledge that
you share with fellow birdies.

Ed,
This may be a good time to change the 90 weight oil in the bearing.
With the use of a turcky baster you can remove most of the old oil.
Refill with fresh oil to the line and check it a few times since it
seams to settle slowly.

The bolt on cap should have an indicator line. Full would be to the bottom of
the bore, over fill will result in leakage, use a bright light and be cautious.

If it is low just add, do not overfill.
It could be time to replace the seals...?????

Ed/Peggy,

Fill it with 85W140 gear oil or something close. Lucas makes a good
product that you can find at most truck stops. There should be a ring
on the clear plastic cover that is well-below the fill plug. Make sure
that the axle is LEVEL before reading it. You don't want too much in
there.
