Installing new guage.

I have recieved a new engine oil temp guage from the fellow I bought
my coach from. Now to install it. The guage is on the verticle part of
the dash panel.Has anyone been into that panel? Any advise will be
better than me going in there blind!

Hi Art:

**CAUTION** **CAUTION**

Remove the 4 bottom out side covers of the lower dash. If the lower dash
has been out before then it should lift up from the front edge and slip
forward a little. If it has not been out before then on the left side of
the lower dash, under one of the blank covers, will be a screw that has to
come out.

Now, with the lower dash panel slid forward, remove the cb mic from the
holder and take the long screw out that holds the cb mic holder. Now the
upper lower dash should be free on that side and if it has been removed it
will probably be free to tilt forward. If it has not been out before then
you need a looooong phillips screwdriver, hold the right side of the upper
lower dash out and reach in with the long phillips and un screw the far
left L bracket. In the bottom center of the upper lower dash, after the
lower panel is moved forward you should see a screw that needs to come out
as well. Now your upper lower dash panel should be free to tilt forward.
**CAUTION** Do NOT force it, if it won't come out enough to replace the
gauge, find what is holding it. I cannot stress **CAUTION** enough on this.

While your in there, remove the light sockets with the lamps from the other
gauges and clean or replace them.

Your going to find a "rats nest" of wiring under and behind both panels.
Remember if you drill, spindle or pierce any of those panels, they are shot
and cannot be brought back. Use only holes provided for screws and such.

differently from the original one. I needed to get a new temp sending switch
also...

Jim,

I replaced both oil temp gages on our 88 FC ( 3208 oil and rear axle
temps) BB gage part number 54438, It is a Teleflex gage.

If this is your gage the temp sensor is a Stewart-Warner, part
number 280EEF . It is available at truck parts stores. It has
several threaded bushings for all thread sizes, One will match the
original threads. BB did not have the correct sensor.

The new guage is not a 54438 Earl said the did not maske it anymore. He sent
me a "superseded" one the index numbers were different. He sent me a new sensor
it was for the old type guage it was reading 40% high. I called Teleflex spoke
to Joe Federsal (great help) he sent me the correct sensor for the guage that I
got from earl, everything seems to work now. This new guage 9153278 is improved
in that it first register point is at 140 rather than 100, top is 320 like the
old one. the end result is that the gauge will provide more accurate readings in
the operational range than the old one. I hope!

Jim,

Yep, that is the correct gage, Teleflex # 9153278.

The BB# 54438 was still a good number, But
they shipped the updated 9153278 gage , Then the temp would read
really high, That is why there is a lot of confusion , when
replacing gages, the sensor must be replaced also.
I like the new scale for the oil temp,200 to 230
Not so good for the rear axle because, it only heats up to about
140 to 170. lowest part of the gage.
