tow bar receiver
Folks,
If you own an LXi I could use your help. I'm installing a Blue Ox base plate on my Honda Pilot but notice that the tow bar connection points are quite high (25 inches). I know that on my LXi, the receiver is quite a bit lower than this. I'm away from the coach so I can't measure it directly. Can someone please air up their LXi and tell me what the distance is from the ground to the bottom of their hitch receiver so I can buy a Blue Ox drop receiver. Thanks, I very much appreciate it. Sorry, Dave.
I would if I could but we're out of town away from the coach right now. Assuming a tow bar expert shows up though... Is it still possible to find and use the simple ball hitch tow bar that used to be hinged onto the front bumper of jeeps?Brad Barton 00LXiDFW bbartonwx@... David,
I was told that the tow bar should angle down from the coach to the towed vehicle. I guess that the thought is that on hard braking the towed will not be forced up. The instructions with the tow bar should describe the geometry of the
connection. The Blue Ox tow bar I have suggested that the connection should be "level" (when parked on level ground) with a tolerance of plus or minus 2 inches. After taking some measurements, I purchased a 9" drop receiver to lower the RV end of the tow bar. (The attachment point on my tow vehicle are rather low.) Once installed, the bar was very close to level, but the drop receiver was _so_ low that I was concerned about the receiver hitting the pavement on dips in the pavement. I then purchased a second drop receiver that was 2" shorter (a 7" drop receiver) plus I purchased a roller that attaches on the bottom of the drop receiver. Even so, I've hit the pavement a few times activating the roller. Probably saved me from burying the receiver in the road. I understand the design of the base plate -- it is surely not very obvious on the front of the car -- but I wish the connection was higher up so that I didn't need so much of a drop on the receiver. Since I have supplemental brakes on the towed, it's unlikely that it will be forced up under hard braking unless the supplemental brakes fail. Since the relative weight of the towed and the RV are so significantly different (48,000 lbs vs 3,200 lbs), I have the towed brake system set to only 'kick in' during hard braking. I have the opposite problem Pete. My Honda Pilot has it's tow
bar pick-up points 25 inches above the ground. I'm away from my coach so I can't measure where the receiver is relative to the ground but I would guess 15 inches or so. Any out there who has access to their LXi who could measure their coach would be a big help. I'm thinking that I'll need an 8 or 10 inch drop receiver mounted upside down. At least this will help prevent scraping the tow bar into the pavement. I thought that's what you were saying earlier in this thread... Are
you measuring when the 'bird is fully aired up? The rear of my coach is very close to the ground (sometimes) when the suspension is down. When ready for the road, the built-in receiver is about 18 inches from the ground. Of course, that would put it 7 inches below the tow bar points on your Pilot... Amazing lack of standards here ... A solution to that is to obtain a drop reciever 4 inch and turn it
upside down so it is a lift I have seen it on other birds and it works okey dokey Roy Anderson on his pt comes to mind He posts on the forum By the way a 4 inch drop extra long from bLue ox is around $110.00 just got one for myself Stephen 77fc35 --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, Pete Masterson wrote: > > I thought that's what you were saying earlier in this thread... Thanks Pete, that's a great help. My coach is pretty similar
to yours - same suspension, pretty much the same length, so I'm probably pretty close to 18 inches fully aired. That sounds about right. Looks like I'll be needing the 8 inch drop receiver (rotated upwards, of course).
