Another generator problem? Two questions?
We had an un seasonable hot weekend here and I was running the gen.
with all three A/C's on. I have the yanmar with the 12.5kw kohler. Water temp. was runing slightly below 220 degrees (which I haven't seen that high before). Since this is my first summer with the coach, my first question is to the guys with yanmars. What kind of water temp. do you see on yours when running the gen. fully loaded on a 92 degree day? While we were in the store for a 1/2 hr or so, came out and the gen. was off. None of the start switches will do anything, no clicking, nothing. The fuse is good. With the water temp. cooled down, I disconnected the hot water shutdown, still no cranking. If I hot wire the fuel solenoid with a jumper and jump it at the starter the gen. starts fine, runs and produces voltage. I just started looking at the schematics for the control box and I'm thinking it might be one of the relays in there. They're labeled CR, C, 1CR and 2CR. Am I on the right path here? And would anybody know which one would give me these symptoms? I'm pushing the limits of my abilities here! Thanks Tom Sorrentino 1987 PT38 Bedford Hills, NY |

Another generator problem? Two questions?
Tom:
I have seen the temps go from 190 to about 210 F, perhaps a radiator cleaning but that is not your problem. When you push the start switch C relay closes completing a circuit from 12vdc to ground through normally closed contacts of the CR relay. When the C relay pulls in, it closes a set of C relay contacts to the starter solenoid. When the starter solenoid pulls, it closes a set of contacts to the fuel solenoid and supplies a flash voltage to the field. also a set of contacts close and supplies voltage to the starter motor. As the starter motor turns over and the gen set starts the starter solenoid opens and another set of contacts in the start solenoid continues to supply voltage to keep the fuel solenoid energized. It sounds like your starter solenoid is faulty. The is the one on top of the starter motor proper. Check it with a meter, you should have 12 vdc on the small post, if only 7 vdc on that wire then the coil of the start solenoid is bad. Remove the small wire to the small post and check the voltage again to prove it out. If disconnected and you have 12 vdc when the switch is pushed, will prove the start solenoid being bad. Another generator problem? Two questions?
Thomas,
I was seeing what I thought were a little high temps around 200 on my generator. I found a slight leak where the metal overflow stem attaches to the neck of the resevoir. I ground off a flat side to a washer put over the stem and soldered the stem to the neck and the washer to the stem and to the tank for support of the stem. I noticed the tank had a label on it that read not to fill the tank but half full. I evacuated down to a half tank. I pressure washed the radiator and fan blades with a soap mixture. My temps now run in the 180 - 185 range. Ralph,
I will check that tommorrow and let you know. Just to make sure I understand you correctly, you want me to put the volt meter on the small terminal of the start motor solenoid and see if 12vdc is there when I push the start switch? Yes, to check the coil of the solenoid. You should have 12 vdc showing on
the meter with the wire attached, if you see only about 7vdc then remove the wire from the terminal and check voltage. Another generator problem? Two questions?
When you push the start switch, with the gen set open so you can hear, you
should hear some clicking in the engine area. What you want to know is if the fuel solenoid is pulling and you should also hear the fuel pump running. If the start solenoid checks out ok then we go to the 1CR rely. But first things first. I will be home tomorrow if you want to call, I can walk you through it, step by step. Ralph,
When I push the start switch, there is no sound, no clicking, no fuel solenoid pulling in, no fuel pump running--nothing. I will check voltage on the starter solenoid and let you know. Ed, was the pin connection under sized as engineered, or is there
issue with a ;glow plug ;wire between plugs ;wire size from 12v source ;glow not shuting off ;over glow? The burnt pin may not be the cause of your problem, it may be a result.
