VW TDI as a toad?
Anyone toad a 5 speed Jetta or Beetle? Looking to buy one to put
behind my PT-40 but I'm getting conflicting information. Dealership techs say yes, others have told me no. What's the scoop? -Ryan '86 PT-40 8V92 Tri-Cities, WA |

What's the scoop? > > -Ryan > '86 PT-40 8V92 > Tri-Cities, WA > Hi Ryan; We can tell you all about using a New Beetle as a towed. We Are fulltiming with a 40ft WLWB with Mille our 2000 New Beetle, 5spd. We had the baseplate and towbar installed last May (2006) at the Blue Ox factory in Penner, NE. These are the most knowledgeable people we have ever met when it comes to tow packages. VW has a difficulty factor of 5 and when we called the local installer in Minneapolis, MN we got bad vibes about having it done there. Called Blue Ox and they said no problem. The entire front end has to come off to install the base plate. We pulled late Sunday afternoon for our Monday morning appointment. Monday morning at 7:00 one of the guys came out and got the car. They warned us that it would take all day to do, so they gave us a company truck to use. We did a little sight seeing around Pender and eastern NE. They have free hook-ups for our coaches. Then Tuesday morning they asked to bring the coach over to the factory for the drop-bar installation and some instructions for hooking and unhooking our towed. We now have towed her about 7000 miles with no problems. Love the Blue Ox package. In fact as we were coming down to see Ralph and Charolette a couple of weeks ago we stopped to have the towbar checked for any unforseen problems and got to tour the plant. Highly recommend considering Blue Ox and having it factory installed. Sorry for the length of the message, but there aren't alot of Beetle owners using them as toweds. Ken and Patti Marsh with our 7 cats on the way to Carson, WA as of 7-1-07. Currently in Albuquerque, NM. |

Hi Ken & Patti,
Thank you for the information on towing your Beetle. Looks like it won't be a problem for us, then! We'll keep looking for a good 5 speed Beetle or Jetta TDI. One question: I'm curious if miles add up on the VW while it's being towed? Thank you! -Ryan '86 PT-40 8V92 Tri-Cities, WA On 5/27/07, towanda692006 > > Hi Ryan; > > We can tell you all about using a New Beetle as a towed. VW TDI as a toad?
Not wanting to start a flame war but; My son-in-law is the leading
dealer sales person in New England. He has been selling VW product since the 80's. He is of the opinion that the only real reason to buy a TDI is so you can hang out at truck stops. Reason: He has many customers running gas VW's well over 2ooKmi. By that time the chassis is about gone. If you run the numbers, consider initial cost and maintenance, it just doesn't work out. I gave my 300SDL to my grandson at 300+Kmi, if he doesn't abuse it I think he can give it to his son. That car had a great chassis, not cheap to fix but great to drive. Sorry, but flavored water is called a soft drink, or juice. You want flavored water? Pour some Maker's Mark over ice and let it melt. That's my flavored water. Amen! |

Pete,
On 5/27/07, Peter T. Arnold > > He is of the opinion that the only real reason to buy a TDI is so you > can hang out at truck stops. It's the extra 13 miles per gallon, on average, that lures people like myself to the TDI. The Volkswagen TDIs get better fuel economy than even a Prius. The TDI is also under-rated; EPA claims 36 city, 41 highway, but a coworker of mine routinely gets 50mpg across the board in his TDI Jetta (& 600+ miles to a tank). That's a manual transmission and driving very conservatively. Besides, I want a toad that uses the same fuel as my coach. I intend to eventually add an external fuel pump to my bird so I can fill the toad up out of the bird's tank. -Ryan '86 PT-40 8V92 Tri-Cities, WA |

Pulling an economical toad behind a Wonderlodge is like ordering a Diet
Pepsi with your order of 'curly cheese fries'. two things I was sure of ;Diesel would one day be less costly than gasoline as it was for so long and ;the price variation would not be a result of a reduced price in Diesel. GregoryO'Connor 94ptRomolandCa |

I was just wondering if that little Civic's odometer spools up while it is
pushing the bus along? No Leroy the Honda doesn't accumulate miles. It's a standard and I just put
it in neutral, turn the ignition off but don't pull the key out and away I go.
