New member - hi, and a pre-purchase question

Greg- from what I have learned about that coach, and I agree the price is
way too high, that the owner bought the coach and fixed it up and now wants a
big price. BUT- the coach has been sitting there for over a year. I told the
salesman that the price was too high. He was going to relate that to the owner-
who obviously doesn't care. Too bad- nice paint, nicer interior.-and with
the Texas Longhorn on the front cap- no moose involved.

That ain't a moose unless Ernie attended A&M. lol
Sometimes price is not the only thing. I personally can attest to that.
For info there is a Royale Conversion for sale an 89 that looks to be in
beautiful shape. It is not cheap by the book because there is no book on BB
Royale conversions. But yet again it may be. http://www.vintagebirds.com. It is
walnut, not white.

I sure don't want to get into a price war here with friends.
I can say this. I paid a fair, not "book" price for my coach 3.5 years ago and I
can in retrospect count on two fingers, at $1000 per finger what I have spent on
what I will call deferred maintenance. On numerous upgrades that I elected to do
including changing out the Primus to Wabasto I have spent less than $10,000. To
me, hydronic heat is worth its weight in gold.
We all know that reworking the interior of a coach with new upholsery, carpet,
tile etc is extremely expensive. A case in point, lately my wife wanted to
recover the couch, why I don't know, so I got a bid. I decided I am in the wrong
business. They sew, I blow out my knees in the tile business. A new quality
paint job is somewhere between $12-20K.
I would rather use the coach than work on it every day, but that is just me. If
an owner kept track of time at a reasonable hourly rate and parts costs, one
would be better off paying the piper at the date of purchase rather than over a
period of years, assuming that coach was in the same shape as mine was when I
purchased it. But then again, that is just how I think. fwiw

I think Jeff Miller said it best a couple of years ago, in regards to
buying a nice coach, or a fixer-upper..
He Said, "Pay Now Or Pay Later"....
Of course, sometimes when we "Pay Later" it is also paying with a few
Vacation Days while the Coach is at the Repair Shop.

Hmm.. I'm really new to this, but we've been doing a LOT of research and
shopping in the last two weeks. Prices have varied on '84 to '88 PT40's
currently on the market from under $50K to almost $100K. That's a huge range,
attesting to the fact that there is no Blue Book on these. Yet the equipment
varies not all that much. So consistent use and good maintenance will count for
a lot in our decision - along with meeting our specific preferences, and a price
that seems reasonable.

My wife Barbara (not on this forum, but I'll invite her to join) reminded me
today that we started this search with a $50K budget, and stretching to double
that is probably not a wise decision (I'm paraphrasing gently here).

Anyway, thanks for all your help.

And I still like the one in Texas best on first appearance (even with the
longhorns) - but there's no way we'll buy it at $97K.

I kind of think its buyers market and will be for along time to
come. There are allot of Bluebird owners that are looking at there
big investment and see the price of fuel to get them from point A to
point B is the biggest problems for using there rigs. I get around
10 mpg or so and if I owned a PT that number probably would be cut in
haft. I would think of selling mine but its still one hell of a
shelter for unseen problems. Good luck on your buying adventure and

It is possible to change the color of the cabinets. there are
laminate paints that are used regulary in the apartment business with
pretty good success. Additionally the doors and / or drawer fronts
could be relaminated, or all or the above or all or the cabinet
work.

It might be a bit more than you want to do your self but many here
could / would do it.

I saw that paint in a Prevost that Pat Poor had for sale a few years ago in
North Texas. It looked pretty good, but was kind of glossy..obviously painted.
I think a flat primer and flat finish paint might give you more satisfactory
results. And if anyone needs stainless steel accents or granite/marble in their
coaches I know a company that does great work and has probably the widest
selection. They have the extra thin lightweight panels that are used in
