Headlight switch

Well, I think my switch has bit the dust. Some time ago I wrote that
the switch did not work in the parking position, but the headlight
came on, but the tail lights didn't. Someone suggested WD40 and that
worked for a while. Doesn't work this time. I have headlights, but
no marker or tailights. Does anyone know the brand or model of the
switch. I went to a couple of parts stores and the said I needed to
bring the old one in and they would match it. Everything is working
fine and I am not thinking of night driving, so I hate to take the
dash apart to get at the switch. Hoping someone has a model number.

Sid,

I don't know if they used the same switch in your '85 as they did in
my '95, but I had a similar problem. Mine is a double rocker where one
rocker handles the parking lights and the other the headlights but the
off position turns both off. Perhaps not the best description. I
though I was going to have to get a new one and was in the process of
removing it when I found that it ia a "snap together" plastic switch.
I put the components back in the proper position and snapped it back
together and it has worked ever since. Hope this is of some help to you,

I got a new 0952465 ($18.15 + tax)from the BB school bus company in
Chittenango NY about 12 miles from me. The light switches were identical.

I have Napa part # HL6669 this may or may not be a good number.

But if you go to a NAPA store they have pictures of these switches.
If you do not want to remove the old one, try to match it to a
picture.

Hi Sid,

I just replaced mine with one from Blue Bird. Was around $100 or
so... like everything else. Brand was "ohmite". Was pretty easy to
get to. New one works beautifully. Could not find a match at any
auto parts stores, but did not try a "good" NAPA (the one here in
Hershey is pretty sad) I can walk you throught the removal and
installation if needed.

Uhm, this is a stock GM switch you can get from NAPA for under $20. The part
# (for my 81) is HL6554.

Hi Al,

You're correct. I was typing in my sleep again! The switch that
I replaced was the dash dimmer switch, not the on/off switch for
headlights. I did get the on/off from NAPA.

Thanks all for the advice. I found a switch at Carquest. They cross
matched it with Napa, Sorensen and Borg. Should be the right one. Now
to open up the dash and replace it. I may be calling on some of you
for advice. I have only opened the dash once to replace a rocker
switch. This looks more complicated.

My headlight switch has smoked its self. The connector went out with
it. BB doesn't carry the connector, found at NAPA, EC20, along with the
switch, a Delco, which some parts places say is prone to failure. I
have found a wire that was in slot #3, (B/Y) that according to my BB
schematic, is supposed to be in slot #7. Maybe that is why my dash
lights won't dim, which was a previous problem. Also previously, I had
to jiggle the rod to get the headlights to come on sometimes. I have
had to do that once with the new switch. Has anyone had to deal with
this problem. Would be appreciative of some insight, as I am worried
that some other wire switching may have occured. I might add that on
this bus, when I replaced the gen.hr. meter, someone had crossed the
wires, putting the previous one to rest. You see why I am concerned
about correct wiring here. Thanks for any help, George Burke 1977 FC31
