Propane Tank Capacity? (84FC35SB)

I recently found out my propane gage is incorrect and ran out of
propane. I was told it was a 45 gallon tank. But when I filled it the
guy tried to tell me it was a 20 gallon tank. He said it would only
take 20 gallons? I'm sure he wanted to sell more propane so what's the
deal? Is it 45gl or 20gl?

I know my '78 is a 45 gallon tank, but you can only fill it to 80%
maximum, which would be 36 gallons. Basicaly they open up the
overflow valve and fill till liquid propane comes out, that is the
limit.
If you are running out of propane and you can only get 20 gallons
in, then something else is taking up space in the tank, like water. I
found green goop coming out of my tank. This probably years of
condensation and Lord knows what else from the many places the tank
was filled in the past.

I basicly took off the regulator and purged what was in the lines,
but haven't actually drained the tank yet, since it has lots of
propane in it.

Measure it? Any data plate?

My "45 gallon" tank has a lot of data stamped in the side, part of which
identifies it as being 43.5 gallons.

My tank is roughly 39 inches long by 18 inches in diameter. That's 39xPix9sq
which is 9924 cubic inches, and there are 192 cubic inches per gallon. 51.7
gallons.

Knock off for the rounded ends and the thickness of the shell and ~45 sounds
right.

Point is, measurement will sure tell the difference between 45 and 25.

25 gallon tanks hold 20, and 45's hold 36, because they are limited to 80% of
capacity. 43.5 would hold 35.

Sheesh, faulty math memory. There are 231 cubic inches per gallon, so my 39x18
tank measures 43 gallons. I suspect the tank is a bit longer than 39 inches - I
can't really get to one end.

I know he didn't bleed it so maybe it's air? But the gage read
full? Hmmmm? Next time I'm out and about in the bus I'll go to
another place and ask them to fill it and bleed the air off. I hope
it's not water! That would be a LOT of water?

If he didn't open the little thumb-screw valve with the metal
washer like ring around it, then he doesn't know how to safely fill
the tank. These tanks don't have an over-fill protection system and
are grandfathered in due to age. You must open the valve and stop
filling when liquid propane starts to come out. If you don't you risk
overfilling, which can be very dangerous. I don't believe it is
designed as a purge valve, it is connected to a tube inside the tank
that is placed so that when the liquid level reaches it it begins to
exit through the valve indicating the tank is legaly full.

Propane is a mixture of many component hydrocarbons, as well as oils,
smelly stuff, and whatever impurities get left in. It's very common to
have a significant accumulation of heavy components in your tank; it's
even worse if you regularly take LP from a source which is at the end
of the local supply chain. If your tank has a drain in the bottom,
have an approved LP handling facility check to see how much is in
there that doesn't belong. I've never seen a tank 1/2 full of junk,
but I've seen enough accumulate in LP carburetors in less than 3
months to put the equipment down.

45 gallon's Keith.
Someone else posted about the proper way to fill these tanks. My gauge only
shows half and it is full now, so will have to take a look to see what is wrong
with it as well.
