Just returned from a short trip. I noticed that the voltage meter on
the dash read 10-11 volts with the engine running. We dry camped and
used the generator every morning. With the generator running the dash
volt meter read 12-13 volts. Wondering if there is an adjustment or
do I have a tired alternator? I am taking it in for oil and lube next
week and can have the alternator checked then.

Sid,

Have you checked the tension/condition of the alternator/? belt?
Unfortunately, things are seldom that simple...

Unless Jim's suspicion is correct about the belt, it sounds like
alternator trouble.

Sid, remove your mattress. There you will find an inspection door. The first
layer is plywood, unscrew that. The second layer is metal, unscrew that. Below
is your alternator- or if like mine 2 alternators. It is a realtively easy
fix and make sure you get a matched pair of belts. Ernie-83PT40 in Texas

Well I checked the belts. What belts? Seems they are broken. Don't
know when this happened> Everything seemed fine until this trip. But
it must have been a while ago since there is some rust on the pulleys.
At this point I don't even know how to get at the alternator. Its on
the back side of the engine and behind the radiator. Can anyone tell
me whats involved. Does the radiator swing out? Any help is
appreciated. I need to get this fixed since we are going to
California in three weeks!

Sid:

You'll find that there is an area at the top of the rear queen bed that you can
open and have access to the belts & alternator from that area. Just move the
bed mattress off and you see the various screws to take out (wood bed mattress
platform) and then there will be a metal cover type plate to remove, then you
can go for it...

if you are skinny or have long arms you can do the belts by going through the
louvered door on the passenger side of the coach.its a long reach!!i'm not
skinny(anymore!) but i have changed the belts this way,i do have the monkey arms
going on though! randydupree93wb

Sid,

I changed my alternator by lifting the mattress from my cross queen
bed and setting it in the hallway, which gave access to a wooden panel
that simply lifts out. Behind that panel is a metal access panel that
has a bunch of phillips head screws holding it in place. Remove the
screws and lift the panel out. It will be kinda heavy, certainly a 1
person job though.

Once the panel is removed, you will be looking squarely at the
alternator. Suggest you havce a 1/2" breaker bar and 1/2" drive
ratchet to remove the bolts.

Be careful with the 2 wires, one is ground, the other is HOT to the
battery.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have installed a 200 amp Leece-
NeVille rather than the 160 amp unit. Just a bit more power to run
Inverter and lights, etc.

Call me with any questions 217-971-0036

Sid,

I did this replacement myself. Lift up the matress and you will
find several panels to remove. ( I assume you have a queen bed). You
will then be right on top of the alternator from inside the coach.

Access from that point is fairly easy. Don't be afraid of a 140amp
leece neville alt. Most truck shops have them on the shelf for
about $180.00. If you are going through all the trouble to do the
belts I would do this. I run my bird with this alt. and run my 2K
inverter with no troubles.

The hardest part was pulling the pulley off the original motorola
alt. I had to have a garage do that with an impact wrench.
