Thanks for your replies. You were right it was a simple thing. For
some reason, the engine lost prime. They were able to get it started
in the shop. I had the unit serviced at Bluebird in March and they
also did the racor. Ever since then, I have been getting a check
engine light when in a hard climb or when releasing the accelerator
going down a hill. However it goes out when I crest the hill or when I
put my foot back on the accelerator. Never a light on level ground or
when ideling. They reserviced the racor, but said they really did not
see anything that looked bad. Hope that fixed it since I am back on
the road again. Thanks again for your help.

Glad it's running. Do you know how they diagnosed the lack of prime and what
they did to
fix it? Do you have a primer pump on the engine?

Doug,

Glad you are back on the road and enjoying the trip! You say the
engine lost prime and they serviced the racor. I hope they changed
the spin on fuel filter(s) also. Seems like the road side service
should have diagnosed the fuel starvation simply by dropping the spin
on fuel filter(s) like I suggested in my first post, if he had checked
to make sure it was getting fuel.

Losing prime is an indication of an air leak in the fuel system
somewhere or restrictions in the fuel supply, yes, like the plugged
spin on fuel filter I described in my earlier response to you, or some
other fuel line restriction. More than likely, it's just an air leak
somewhere.

Sounds to me like the 'real' problem still exists if you are getting
check engine lights. You need to pull the code and figure out what is
going on. Check your owners manual to find out how to do that if you
don't know, or post the question here. You didn't list your coach in
your signature on your last message, but I think it was a 1988? If
so, I think you have the push button shifter and pulling the codes
would involve watching the lights on the shifter console, counting the
blinks and then checking the code manual for the related cause.

If you are still sucking air somewhere in the fuel supply, running
that thing real lean under load is not a good long term solution IMO.
I would be watching the gauges really carefully, especially the
temperature gauge and the Racor vacuum gauge.

Good luck on the rest of the trip.

The 8V92's and 6V92's don't have a booster pump and the fuel pump IS
NOT self-priming. I just replaced my fuel pump last month and replaced
the hoses to the filters. Despite pre-filling the racor, spin-on and
the fuel line between them, the new pump would not pull fuel up from
the spin-on filter assembly. You have to "back-fill" the fuel line
from the head of the spin-on filter assembly to the fuel pump in order
to prime it. My guess is that one of the lines on yours is cracked and
letting air seep into the fuel line between the pump and spin-on
filter assembly. Those hoses are easy to replace, just remember to be
exceptionally careful about not getting any contaminants into them
when you re-attach the new hoses.

when air is found in a fuel system and the tank has not run dry, there
is a opening some place in the fuel path that is letting air in.
Replacing a filter and experiencing a smooth running bus may give false
security that you found the dirty filter to be the CAUSE of the 'engine
will not start failure'. It could be that a partialy compramised
filter with much more dirt capacity is causing a supply of fuel issue
to the pump and this minor vacumn is enough to make the pump suck air
through a crack as path of least resistance.

Vacumn is the method used to determine if a filter is clogged and even
that gauge will not work proper if there is a leak reducing vacumn
pressure with introduction of air. If the gague is viewed prior to shut
down and inches of water was within range, it may be a fuel/air leak
issue

Would it be worth installing a manual or electric pump to solve just this
problem?

Good thought. An electric fuel pump could be plumbed to the spin-on filter
head. Its fuel source should be fairly close to the fuel tank or at least
before the Racor filter. Turn the pump on to prime the engine. Shut if off
after engine start.

Maybe I am lucky But have had this bird for 10 years
and the times that I have lost fuel prime it was my own fualt either did not
change the O ring on the top hold down bolt .Before you change fuel filters was
it running?
Also there is a chance you fuel line collapse.

When I chage fuel filters I finish the racor first, then i fill up the spin on,
i crack the two outlet lines at the filter going to the fuel passages in the
heads and spin the engine until clear fuel comes out with no bubbles. tighten
the lines She usually starts in about 15 seconds after that.

one more though ..if air is down you can't give the engine throttle to crank,
you can push on the governor if your rear start switch is workibg
