Transmission "Do Not Shift" Light and Code 22 (Speed Sensor)

Transmission "Do Not Shift" Light and Code 22 (Speed Sensor)
Greetings All; I started my coach today which has been sitting in
covered storage with shore power for about two weeks. The
transmission "Do Not Shift" light and check transmission light are
staying on. It flashes a Code 22 which indicates a Speed Sensor issue.
Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I did not note any
transmission problems on my last trip which was about two weeks ago. I
cleaned the ground strap connections on the transmission and frame and
checked the transmission cannon plug but the warning lights remain on.
Thanks. David Hanvy 89WB PT40 Crosby, TX

Although I don't think your bus would start if the remote rear start switch was
acting up, mine will give me a do not shift light in the rear start position and
in the front position if it is not engaged properly. Not all coaches are wired
to give a do not shift light on the remote rear start position but mine does. I
have never checked my codes so can't help there. I would cycle that switch to
rear, off, and back to front, restart and see what happens.. It is a long shot
but easy to do.
Let us know what you find for future reference.

Leroy/Kevin,
Thanks for your replies. I started the engine from the rear remote
and the transmission warning light/do not shift remains on. No change
when I switched back to the front either. Additionally, I
disconnected from shore power and disconnected the ground cable on
the battery bank in an effort to reset the tranny. No luck on that
either. (do not shift equals WILL not shift) I plan to to locate and
read up on the Speed Sensor as a next step.
All input is appreciated. David Hanvy 89WB PT40 Crosby, TX

David, I chased a do not shift light for months. mine would go out
when the coach was started and come on when the bus was shut off.
Finally found loose wire on back of ignition switch. Low voltage
and bad grounds do weird stuff to theses beasts. If you are unable
to solve I'll get you the phone number for Industrial Transmission
in Waco. They have the best Allison techs I have found and are
usually willing to help you on the phone. Mike McMahan 1989 PT40

Mike, Thanks for the input. I'll check the ignition switch wiring on
both the front and rear remote. I would appreciate the contact info re
Industrial Transmission in anycase. The local Allison rep is the
Houston Stewart & Stevenson shop. I have spent more than a reasonable
amount of $$ with this outfit on other type repairs in the past.

Transmission "Do Not Shift" Light and Code 22 (Speed Sensor)
All, I'm sorry to report that my best efforts yielded no progress
today. I'll sleep on it and if nothing else occurs to me to try, I'll
give Industrial Transmission a call on Monday. Hate to think what a
pain it would be to have get the coach towed. It's inside a storage
building and there is very lttle room to maneuver in and out of the
facility in the base case. David Hanvy, 89WB PT40 Crosby, TX

Transmission "Do Not Shift" Light and Code 22 (Speed Sensor)
Hoorah for a happy ending; Thanks to all who responded. The problem
was finally found to be a bad connection on the connector plug going
to the speed sensor. It looked okay but ony worked after a liberal
spraying of contact cleaner and an application of connector
compound/grease. I did gleam the following info for anyone with an
Allison HTB 748 tranny. A correctly functioning speed sensor on this
tranny should read from 116 to 165 ohms (per Industrial Transmission)
when checked across the two leads. David Hanvy 89WB PT40 TX

David,
Thank you for your posting. I've saved it in my Good-Things-To-Know,

Transmission "Do Not Shift" Light and Code 22 (Speed Sensor)
Thanks for the report. Happy it was something simple.
One question. What prompted you to zero in on the speed sensor? Do you have a
drawing of the TCM wiring and functions? If the bus is not moving how does the
speed sensor affect the shifter pad, if you know? Just for future reference. I
would like to know more since I do not have a manual or drawing on my TCM.

David Hanvy 89WB PT40 Crosby, TX

start switch was acting up, mine will give me a do not shift light in
the rear start position and in the front position if it is not
engaged properly. Not all coaches are wired to give a do not shift
light on the remote rear start position but mine does. I have never
checked my codes so can't help there. I would cycle that switch to
rear, off, and back to front, restart and see what happens.. It is a
long shot but easy to do.
