Engine Noise difference

Has anyone here had an older Wanderlodge with the 210 HP engine and
then moved on up to a forward control Wanderlodge with a 300 HP engine
forward control? I would just like to know if the latter forward
control Wanderlodges quited the engine noise down. No big deal about
the engine noise with my old 78 but since I have never ridden in a 88
Wanderlodge I just would like to know. Thanks Jon

Jon,

Never been in an 87-89 FC, but I can tell you that when I re-insulated
the doghouse on my 82 FC, it made a HUGE difference. If you haven't
done this project, I recommend it highly.

Scott when I bought my 78 the previous owner had installed new sound
deaden material. Now I wonder why the folks at the Old Blue Bird
Factory never installed a good sound deaden material? Maybe because
it was not available at the time but those old coaches were expensive
and why on gods green earth did they not work on this area? Scott
when you installed your sound deaden material what was the material
like under the dog house before you installed your new material?

My 82 did have sound deadening originally. I do not know what it was
when it was new, but it had degerated into basically a rubber mat
with a granular cover that would flake off when you touched it. I am
assuming the granular stuff used to be some sort of foam. The
rubber "base" would easily peel off in large chunks as the adhesive
had degerated. It was all very fragile. This stuff must have been
top-of-the-line at the time, because BB used it all over...engine,
gen compartment, etc.

I peeled off everything I could, cleaned it up, and installed modern
foil-backed insulation with 3M adhesive. A year later when I sold
the coach, it was all holding firm and hadn't loosened at all. It
helped with sound, heat, and made the engine compartment look much
cleaner. I did my gen compartment, too.

The Silver editions (87 to89) use a much better sound insulation than
previous models. I dont know the composition but it is a blanket type
material and seems to stand up really well. Mine is still attached and
has no holes. NOw the Genset is another story. BB used this horrible
but expensive pyramidal foam that deteriorates from : heat, fumes, road
grime and time. Not a fun job to remove the gennie and reinsulate.

What did you re-insulate with? Even my '02 is cursed with
the disintegrating pyramid foam.

I used a material that is almost the same as what Steven Birtles
sells. The hardest part is removing all the old insulation. Wear a good
dust mask. This is one dirty job. I did post an article in the files
section. There are some photos as well. Look for onan insualting.doc

Jon,

Noise is hard to discribe and it is subjective,
With out using a DB noise meter.

So , My unscientific opinion:

It has been a long time since I drove or rode in a 210,
But my opinion is , the 300 Hp is quieter,
I feel the turbo helps cancel noises.
and mostly the air intake filter in located outside in the
passenger side bay under the front bumper.
Intakes on most motors transmit motor noise.

The insulation on the late model FC's 87,88,89 ,
is a thick blanket, It looks like heat shield blankets.
The Doghouse carpet and padding is thick and plush.
No trouble having a normal conversation with Patty the co-pilot.

The only person I know is Bob Janes , 87 FC Greenville , N.C.
He ownes both a 210NA and the 300 hp turbo.

I agree. Our 84 FC had the Cat 250hp 3208T. Even with the electric radiator
fan turning, it was not much worse than a normal pickup (back then).
