Bendix cruise control

Bendix cruise control
Hello everyone:

Earlier today, I put some files in a folder in the files section Concerning
the Bendix Cruise Control. It is split up into 3 PDF files and is as
complete a manual as I have been able to put together over the years. The
Manual not only cover advanced trouble shooting, it covers the dip switch
set up of the control module and the math that addresses the "why" of the
dip switch settings.

Along with these files, I up loaded another PDF file for the 6V and 8V air
throttle systems, as these systems on the PT's incorporate the air
throttle. There is another file section that is the text portion explaining
how the air throttle works and the sequence of operation that I wrote a
couple of years ago.

I hope you find these files helpful.

Oh for those that have not run across it as yet, on the FC's the high idle
is set with the cruise control where the PT's the cruise is not used but a
separate high idle system comes into play.

There is no real time adjustment to be made for the delay.


Air, being a gas, compresses then there are mechanical items that the air
interacts on like valves and finally moving the cc-5 cylinder. So the
air, compresses slightly (one place for a delay) then goes through 2 or 3
valves in the process ( another place for delay) and finally the cc-5.
Now then the air starts out at 120 psi then is dropped by a modulator
valve then travels 40 feet (give or take) then through an inversion valve
and the throttle actually depends on the difference between the 120 psi
and 80 to 90 psi at these valve, resulting in your throttle works on 15
to 20 psi of air.


About that only thing one can do, is lube the cable from the cc-5
cylinder to the throttle body and reduce the mechanical drag produced
there.

Almost all of that delay you describe went away on mine when the air throttle cable was removed and cleaned.

Ralph,

Thanks for posting the files. I have been looking for documentation on
the bendix control system. My cruise control is working great, but my
high idle switch goes to max throttle when activated. I have had
suggested that I need additional return springs on the throttle, but I
have not had a chance to investigate. However, having the bendix files
will give me some great reading material.

I saw in another post you made following this one that on the PT the
high idle has a separate control system and does not used the bendix.
Do you have any information on the high idle system or is it contained
in the air throttle write up?

I'm headed for the air throttle write up now....

But, now I am more confused??????

Our Bendix cruise control works great. It is the high idle
on our FC that is intermittent, It occationally takes off
and really revs up the 3208, So it can not be trusted or used.

One of the troubleshooting tips in the manual is to check the
resistance of the potentiometer in the CC-5.
Well two of the readings show an open circuit and the third reading
is in tolerance.
Do you have any advice on where to check further??

The PT high idle starts at a switch on the dash, this applies power to an
Allenair valve under the Coach near the front up inside the frame rail. The
Allenair valve is a metered type valve and drops the psi from 120 to a
controlled out put that goes to a silver cylinder about 6 inches long
located to the left of center when your in back facing the engine. That
cylinder can be adjusted for the right high idle rpm's. With the age on
these units, the plunger on the cylinder or the clevis it pushes may be
worn, you just have to have a look at it.

Morning Bill:

There are 2 valves mounted on or near the control unit. I would suspect one
of those are sticking from time to time on you for the high idle. Since
your cruise is working the cc-5 is working and that is in drive but when in
N the air should be metered from those valves to the inversion valve and
conversely the cc-5. Back up a step or 2 from the cc-5 and see what you
come up with is where I would start.

Morning Ralph & Bill: Is there a way to clean or service those two
solenoid valves? Are the replacements available through Bendix? My
understanding is that these valves are mounted inside the approx 12"X
16" steel case behind the drivers side battery box on the 1988 FC.

Bill...have you removed the throttle cable to clean & lubricate?

Bendix cruise control
Hi Dick:

Nice place to be, Canyon Lake area. The parts for the Bendix
Cruise are obsolete and to my knowledge not available as new any longer.

It may just be a matter of lubrication being needed too. One thing that
should not hurt to try is, using CRC spray lube, remove an air line just
prior to a valve and spray CRC into the air line the re connect and apply
air. This should lubricate the dry o-rings and so forth and may free things
up a bit. Just a thought, I know I have done this to my unit and others and
it helped, just don't over do it. The CC-5 cable can be lubricated as well.

Thanks...I think I smell coffee and breakfast awaits...

Yes Canyon Lake is nice...we'll be at Lake Point Resort for about 6 weeks.
