Replacement Generator
When i first bought a Wanderlodge I heard about being able to run the Perkins
for extended periods of time. The first time we ran it all night, I was up
every 30 minutes checking the gauges. Finally I realized that she would shut
down from either overheating, oil pressure low or run out of fuel. Now- she can
run and run while I snooze. If it wouldn't leak oil-- thats another story.
Ernie 83PT40- coach is 130 miles west of me- wonder how she's doin?

Replacement Generator
Today while removing the Perkins motor to replace the seals on it we
got to thinking, does it pay to even do the job on a generator with
more than 5500 hours on it? We wonder if all we will be doing is fixing
this thing, and would the money be better spent in the purchase of a
new Onan 8000 quiet deisel? Is this a good route to go and is a 8000
big enough, its 240 pounds lighter than a 10,000 or a 12,500 watt Onan.
Will it fit in the tray and can it be wired into the coach as it is?
Looking for comments & suggestions by those who have made this move.

Replacement Generator
You are going to get a lot of different answers on this Jeff. In my
opinion the Perkins diesel is superior to almost any other RV generator
that you can buy and is far more expensive. You have a commercial quality
diesel that was designed to run 24/7 for long periods of time with
virtually no maintenance. You might want to consider however changing out
the generator part of it for a brushless one. The quiet diesel is only
quiet because it comes in a very heavily insulated enclosure. If your
diesel is mounted where mine is (just behind the entrance door) you can
really quiet it down with Soundown 2# per sq foot lead lined insulation (
http://www.soundown.com) It is doubtful that the engine itself needs much of
anything at 5000 hours.

the problems with most generators is that they are not used enough
a good quality generator is is purpose built and there are some
notably with a real lister petter engine that have accumulated upwards
of 30,000 hours of dependable power. you will pay a premium for this
type of power though they are meant to be continuosly run with
extended range fuel tanks and also oil pans. Isolated
telecommunication sites ar built to be serviced once a month with no
other intervention either refueling or service.
If you want a great generator set look at lister petter coupled with
newage Generator end but be prepared to pay

that the crank shaft was going to have to be replaced or built back up.
I decided to replace the hole generator with a new 12 KW power teck.I personly
preferd the power teck with a Kubota engin over the old worn out perkins
engin.The power teck has no slip rings or brushes.

Replacement Generator
I've got five diesel generators at my place. I bought them in India from
Kirloskar, which
is the far easts equivalent of GE. The only thing they don't manufacture is
autos. The gensets are two cylinder motors with generators that differ
from Stanford Newage
only by the name plate. The engines can be started manually with a 2 to 1
geared crank and
comes with decompression valves. Side plates on the engines are removable
so you can, if
needed, replace rod bearings and such....each cylinder has a separate head
and everything is
as simple as possible. The engines are a close copy of the old Lister but
improved.

The manual is written in five languages, no European. You get a large
chart which shows in
cartoon fashion what to do and when. You get a tool kit that allows you to
fix anything on the
engine and a box of spare parts. They are designed for use in the most
miserable climates and
conditions imaginable. The instructions are done is such a fashion that an
illiterate farmer can
repair and maintain his engine. It is truly an amazing thing to see.

While at the factory, I watched a 12.5kw genset run at full load. They had
a system that changed the oil without stopping the engine. The hour meter
was merrily clicking
as it passed some 50,000 hours.

A friend of mine, a long time diesel mechanic, said they are bullet proof.

And they could also be used for a boat anchor... they weigh over 1400 pounds...

They are, without a doubt, the strongest, simplest, genset made.

Now, I'll tell you about Witte....This is an engine company that makes a
diesel engine
that is used by 99% of all the oil companies to power pumps in areas without
electricity...from the arctic to the Sahara, you find Witte gensets and
they ARE expensive.
They proudly proclaim that they are American made.....unless you go to
India and find
all these funny parts being made with the Witte logo on them......

Different strokes for different folks. The perkins is a far more expensive
unit then anything you could replace it with and it is more ruggedly built
for severe service. I cant for the life of me understand why people think
newer is better. Exactly what dont you like about the Perkins that you
found in what ever you got that replaced it? Mine has 2400 hours on it and
is just broken in.

Replacement Generator
So I guess I am too cheap on my 12.5 with 1400 hrs @ $2500. It does crank all
three airs no prob. with the needles deep in the green.
