Help with Air Throttle
We fired up the Bird, after not running it for about two months,
and we have no foot throttle acceleration. Our 88 FC has a Williams air control foot trottle. And a Bendix Cruise Controll. Both the foot throttle and the cruise control, share the same air throttle cylinder. This air cylinder with the attached cable to the injection pump, works great, for the high / low idle, that is set by the Resume/Set switches on the Bendix Cruise. The foot brake also lowers the idle. It appears that the Cruise control is out of the circuit when turned "Off". The cruise worked great on our last trip. So is there a check valve or air solenoid switch in the air plumbing between the air supply and the foot throttle?? Where is it located?? Any help or ideas are needed and welcome. I was able to get some information from the drawings, that Ralph has in the files. But these seem to be for a 6V or 8V and may be different than our FC. Bill 88 FC Michigan |

Help with Air Throttle
Bill:
I missed one item on that air throttle. The out put air from the air throttle valve, the copper tubing should go to an air throttle control cylinder modulator. It will be or should be located in the general area of the throttle valve. Help with Air Throttle
If you turn the wheels to the right full lock, you can see the treadle valve for the air throttle. Verify air is getting there, then crack the supply line to the throttle actuator and see if air is getting there. As it's been sorta cold, you might have some ice blocking supply. The bendix 'mess' is on the inside battery box wall. I think I'd start with a heat gun on all the lines with the air supply at pressure. Many potential blockage opportunities in that system.

Help with Air Throttle
Vroom, Vroom, What a Happy Sound.
Late model FC's and many 6V's and 8V's have the Bendix Cruise Control, which also incorporated the air treadle foot throttle. There are ten valves, these include: inversion valves, reducing valves, check valves, double check valves and solenoid metered orifice valve switches. . The electronic module gets input from the ignition, air brakes, park brake, speed sensor, cruise, resume and set controls. The reason for the above description, is the fact that the Bendix is no longer supported, and it is a very complex system. If an owner has trouble or problem , I would suggest evaluating a complete updated replacement unit, Although the Bendix is a very reliable system, information to repair and trouble-shoot is rare and hard to find. The wiring and the numerous copper tubing lines are very difficult to trace. Parts are not in stock and difficult to locate. Fortunately, I was successful in repairing our no foot throttle acceleration problem, But many phone calls and trouble shooting hours were needed. Our problem was a 12V solenoid that controls air pressure flow. Help with Air Throttle
Hi Bill, I, indeed have a black box and inside that box is just about the same stuff as in your coach. Best thing is to keep the cover on that box at all times~O]

Help with Air Throttle
Bill, Where is the 12V solenoid that controls
air pressure flow? Help with Air Throttle
Hi Dan,
This solenoid, that I referred to in the post, controls the air flow to the Foot throttle, in conjuction with the Bendix Cruise Control. On the 88 FC front engine it is located, under the coach between the engine and battery box on the driver side. It is behind a steel cover mounted to a steel box about 12" x 14" x 2". Inside this box are all the associated parts for the Bendix cruise, including the valves, solenoids, electronic module and lots of copper pipe connecting all the stuff together, It is quiet a RAT's nest. On an SP it is in the rear, driver side on the engine fire wall, open and easy to see and work on. BB used this valve in several areas to control air flow. I do not know if your 88 PT Bird uses this system or where it would be located. The valve looks like this: http://www.allenair.com/2-3wayvalves.htm Or a better view here: http://www.allenair.com/pdf/2-3WayValves.pdf go to page #3 and scroll to the bottom , left side, it is labeled " Grommet Housing Suffix G" Bill 88 FC Michigan --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "maureyroad" wrote: > > Bill, Where is the 12V solenoid that controls > air pressure flow? > Dan > 88pt38 > Jackson, MS > > > > > > > > --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "pattypape" > > wrote: > > > > > > We fired up the Bird, after not running it for about two months, > > > and we have no foot throttle acceleration. > > > > > > Our 88 FC has a Williams air control foot trottle. > > > And a Bendix Cruise Controll. > > > > > > Both the foot throttle and the cruise control, share the same air > > > throttle cylinder. > > > This air cylinder with the attached cable to the injection pump, > > > works great, for the high / low idle, that is set by the > Resume/Set > > > switches on the Bendix Cruise. > > > The foot brake also lowers the idle. > > > > > > It appears that the Cruise control is out of the circuit > > > when turned "Off". Help with Air Throttle
Hey Ernie, that is funny,,,.....
But you may have a similiar or a more complicated system on your PT. Bill 88 FC --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, erniecarpet@... wrote: > > > In a message dated 1/26/2008 6:45:51 P.M. Help with Air Throttle
Bill
I'm glad you have it fixed. Nothing like having trouble in your own drive way. I don't even mind that.I have one of those valves for my Horton fan on the curb side engine compartment on the frame rail & I have seen the one in my drivers side engine compartment for the Bendix cruise control. Where were you able to find one?
