300 Amp delco remy alternator
David. You should be able to replace the seal by removing the pulley. I rebuild starters and alternators but have not had any experience with your unit. I will check with one of my suppliers Monday and confirm if this is correct. I seem to remember seeing an article in one of the trade magazines on the seal.

Folks,
My alternator is leaking oil at the shaft where the pulley attaches. I assume there's an oil seal that has gone bad. Anyone know if these seals are available? Should I try to have the seal replaced, or should I replace the alternator with a new unit, or should I replace with a reman-ed unit? Thanks Paul, I was able to dig up this: http://www.elreg.com/files/TRANSIT.pdf Elreg has 8 kits for my alternator which provide everything from bearings to seals to oil lines to electricals... I think my alternator's had a rough life, the paint is peeled and the body is rusted, indicating lots of heat. I wonder if the leak is just the beginning of future problems. I hope Fred's seal repair works. I socked that away inmy BB file just in case. I've been told the price of one of those units will take your breath away. Even the Leece Neville replacement that skips the oil-cooling is between 2 and 3K down here. BradBarton00LXiDFW bbartonwx@...

Morning David
To remove the belt,there is a idler pulley in the center of the engine with an adjustment bolt (about 8 inches long) aboveat an angle.Loosen this bolt about two inches allowing the pulley to move away from the belt and you can remove the belt.
The alternator pulley is removed with a 33mm socket.(1 3/8 may be close) A 1/2 air gun with 100 psi will get it off, but don't "rattle on it" for much longer than 10 seconds at a time.
Once the nut is off the pulley will slip off easily as it is a splined armature shaft.You will now see the seal plate held on with 6 bolts,remove the bolts and the seal plate will come off revealing the front bearing. Now remove the sealcollar still on the shaft and an o ring.Scrape the seal plate gasket off the alternator housing.Change the seal on the plate being careful to press the seal in properly,if the seal surface is dry apply a thin coat of grease an the lip.Reassemble the oring ,seal collar and seal plate and pulley, washer andnut,then the belt and re-adjust with theidler pulley with the long adjusting bolt and you have now saved a lot of time and money.
Also I have a seal, gasket and o-ring kit available if you need it.

Ichanged thealternator seal and gasket in mid-March and have drivenabout 500 miles since and it seems to be dry in all the area that had oil spray from the leak.

So far I've had no leaks in the first year I've owned it. But your information will help me avoid replacement if it does start leaking. And we know that just about anything with oil in it will leak, eventually. BradBarton00LXiDFW bbartonwx@...
