I have a question for you. What size tires do you have on your PT-43,
& PT-42 owners? Trying to decide on new tires. I have a placard up on
the celing above the drivers poistion that states 315 75R 22.5 on
22.5 X 9 rims, and another plaqard in the bay the states 12R 22.5
The Michelin tire site has the rating for these tires and the 315's
has almost 3000 lbs more capacity.I haven't checked into all the
dimensions yet. I just wanted an informal survey on tire sizes for
these coaches. Presently I have the 12R 22.5's. I have a cut in a
stear tire and two others that are almost to the dreaded 5 year time
out. So 3 or 4 tires are in my future.

I have 12R22.5 tires in all 8 positions. THe wheels on my coach are
8.5" wide.

315's offer an interesting upgrade possibility -- but the major
concern is spacing between the tires on the dual axle. If the tires
rub (at all) there is a significantly greater chance of a premature
failure.

The previous owner selected Toyo tires. Toyo has since quit offering
RV tires (but their "bus" tires work just fine). Apparently, some RV
manufacturers, using the Toyo tires had overloaded them, causing wear
and blowout problems. (But the garbage came back to haunt Toyo, not
the mfg. where the real responsibility lay.)

I recently priced some Sumitomo tires at J&O Tire in Richmond, CA.
Their price was competitive with Les Schawab who provided a
replacement for one tire that had been ruined by misalignment (and
wear) in the front end. (My tag axle tires are looking just a bit
rough from wear caused by the inescapable dragging they encounter.)

Pete and Kurt,

I upgraded to Michelin 315 80R22.5's in the spring and have just
completed a trip to Montana and back with them. Ride was incredibly
smoother and quieter. I've checked for rubbing and also checked tire
temps several times. They are not rubbing- but are about 1" apart when
the tag axle is dumped. If the tag is aired-up, they have about 1-1/2
inches between them. So far, we've traveled 6500 miles with no adverse
results and a much smoother ride. I have absolutely no reservations
about running them on the steer axle- the drive caused me some
concern, but so far, it has been unwarranted. Try them on the steer
first and see how you like them.

We have been running Sumitomo 315 80R22.5 since 11-04. I put about
40k miles on them. There is no problem with the clearances between
tires on the drive axle. The only problem I have ever had been when I
attempted to back up a steep driveway while cutting the wheels hard to
the right. That cause a lot of weight to be transferred to the left
front tire. I thought I might have heard rubber rubbing on something.
No visible damage on anything. (Come to think about it, it might
have been the event that could have cracked my upper left shock
mount.) In any case the tires operated fine for the last four
years...until last month.

Last month my coach started pulling to the right. I took the coach
into shop specializing in motor home alignments last week. They found
the alignment is just fine. The (knowledgeable) shop owner believes I
have a shifted belt in one of my front tires that is causing the
tracking problem. In a week or so I am going to move two tires off
one side of my drive axle to he front end to test the theory.

Point is: The 315s' are fine. I use to think the Sumitomos' were
great. They rode nicely and were quiet. If the theory of shifted
belts on my front tires is right I have to give a thumbs down on a
recommendation of Sumitomos'
