Replacing the TVs

With February rapidly approaching, thoughts run to the work involved
in replacing the TVs for digital models.

I would think we can negotiate a better price to have the work
performed "someplace" or "someplaces".

I have seen a really nice "conversion" done by Coachcraft by McDonald
(sp) outside Atlanta. The coach I saw had the TV relocated to the
center of the front overhead and the electronics moved to the driver's
side overhead. The storage/electronics areas had black smoked
glass/Lexan which allows IR (remote control) to operate and matches
the face of the LCD TV. Looked VERY good.

I know some have already done their own or paid others or are like me
and watching time running out.

If you have seen good conversions, please share the info here or much
better would be photos of completed jobs so we can all get ideas etc.

I'm actually willing to negotiate group work if others are interested.
I plan on having my coach done sometime in January to allow me time to
decide on what and where.

Hi Paul

I only replaced the OE tv's with the same size digital tube type found at a Fry's Marketplace (giant grocery store).

The only fabrication needed was the straps and hold downs.

I am certain that I will regret not doing a complete makeover, but for both sets we spent less than$ 300.00(stock closeout?) and about 5 or 6 hours of pleasant work.

I now have very nice digital tv's for a little $$ but no high definition.

It is my understanding that a converter box will obviate the necessity to change out the TV set. Unless of course we are just looking for a reason to get a digital TV. FYI, If you don't use satellite or over-the-air TV, preferring park cable when plugged in, I don't believe you have tochange anything.

To make your existing satellite TV work properly, you'll need a converter box. And if you want all digital HD satellite, you'll need a new antenna and receiver.

Fortunately, we don't watch much TV on the road.

well if you have a satelite dish, my understanding is that you wont need a converter box. i assume that this is true with cable hhok up to. only over the air transmissions....

I installed flat lcd sony's in my coach a year or so ago pretty easy to do, except for the speakers had to get an amp and install to get sound.

Definitely remove satellite from that discussion! Satellite has always been pure
digital, and no change is needed. Only over-the-air is affected.

I have a digital HD TV installed in Blue Thunder, but it is three years old and
does not incorporate a digital tuner. For the most part we use satellite (HD),
but we like to be able to get locals for weather, etc. I installed a converter
that has pass-through for current analog.

I installed black wire screen on the cabinet door that holds all of the TV gear.
Did it for ventilation, but it also passes the IR to operate the converter.

You are right. Sorry. Only terrestrial TV transmitters are changing.

If you want HD satellite, then you need new stuff.
My first satellite was C-band, not digital, but I knew better.

You'll also need a new radio receiver for HD radio someday, but it'll be much less expensive, and no monthly fees, either.

The converter box will make the TV continue to work... but the box
replaces the TV tuner (you set the TV to channel 3 or 4 like for a
VCR) and you use the remote for the box. In an RV, that suggests some
mounting issues. In my 'bird, getting to the back of the existing TV
to hook up the converter) is going to be a hassle (at the very least)
and then, where do I put the box? Also, how do I integrate the
(traditional signal) cable and (digital signal) antenna. From a
practical standpoint, the converter box ought to go up front where
the selector box sits. But then, the remote, which requires line of
sight, won't work with the bedroom TV (where I generally watch most
of my TV).

The advantage of replacing the tube-TV with a digital LCD panel is
reduced weight, possibly larger screen size in the same area, and
(naturally) digital signal capability (to say nothing about HD
performance). So, the issue isn't as straight forward as it may seem
at first.
