Interesting note from my insurance company
They just sent me my endorsement and uncharacteristically I decided to
look it over. Well ... pleasant surprise. They added RV roadside assistance AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE! They are also listing "Limited Mexico Coverage" but I can't find out any details without obtaining and reading the entire policy. WOW, something for free! I'm stoked. Interesting note from my insurance company
Actually, a lot of "auto" insurance policies include road service/
towing insurance, either at a small charge or at no charge. It depends, in part, in what state you're in and the standard policies issued in that state. The local towing service won't care what policy you have as the coverage is a pay and reimburse type of coverage. That is, you find a towing or roadside repair service, and the insurance company reimburses you for the expense of the tow or service call (but not for some types of labor, parts or fuel) up to the limits stated in the policy. The main problem is, YOU have to find the service provider. Hardly the easiest thing to do when you're out on the road without yellow pages or other support (even if you have access to the Internet). The Emergency Road Service provided by FMCA/Coach Net or Good Sam ERS is a prepaid service. You call the 800 number on the membership card, and the ERS finds and dispatches a service provider. You only have to pay for the parts, fuel, or time charges not included in the service call charge. (e.g. If a service provider has a $100 fee to come to your location, the ERS pays it. You may then have to pay the mechanic for X hours of labor on site, if there is a labor charge beyond the service fee. When I recently had a blow out, Good Sam ERS arranged payment for the tire "at our national discount rate" (that wasn't all that great) and the service call included installing the tire by the side of the road. Still, I didn't have to come up with *cash* for the service call or tire, as is sometimes the case if you're on a pay-as- you-go/reimbursement plan. So, you may have "free" road service coverage, but it may or may not be the road service coverage you want or need. Most insuarnce policy tow services have a distance or dollar limit. Can
you imagine the cost of towing a BB 200 miles?? Good Sam or FMCA will tow you to the nearest accredited facility for your repairs. If your Detroit needs repairs that would mean a Detroit Certified facility. That could entail a long tow. Both FMCA and Good Sam are aware of the type of service vehicle required and normally you will get a KW type truck with a wheel lift . Try and find that on your own. If you need a tire serviced they will send a truck tire service truck. For $100 you cannot go wrong. Both FMCA and Good Sam will reimburse you up to $1000 for Mexico service. Bruce 1988 FC35 |

I'm just reporting the facts as writen in my policy endorsement. First it is a specific rider for RVs so I have to assume they understand not to send a F-150 tow truck. Second its not a "re-embursement" plan where I have to call the service myself, they make the call and dispatch appropriate service resources. Third they do specify they will tow it to the nearest qualified repair facility if necessary. Now that said, they may not know what they got themselves into but I have NEVER hung up the phone to Hartford Customer Service without being 100% satisfied, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. Let me enjoy my freebee. You might want to ask me how I feel the next time your insurance is up for renewal. One thing you might want to check on is if using this service is considered a "claim" on your insurance policy, thus affecting your rates.
