Allison HTB741 fluid change
Dan,
Pete has a different trans(6sp) than we do. That being said, the
aux filter is a spin on, also bought from Napa(just tell them it's
for an HT700 series). Before installing, fill it with fluid and make
sure it's TIGHT, and the other is in the valve body area just inside the pan. I
think there are 2 bolts holding it on but I really don't remember,it's been a
couple of years. At the last seminar that I
went to, they said we can go 50k, with no time limits. That is if you
don't abuse it, ie spinning the tires on take off, or using the
retarder constantly. The 50k, is with syn. Dino oil, go 5k, or at
engine oil change time, again it's all in how it's used. Remember, more
retarder use changes those parameters. Heat is also a killer.
Put 5 1/2 gallons in, crank engine, run it through the gears, add
to full cold mark. When possible, drive it for a bit(until warm),
check again(make sure it's somewhat level), and add as needed.
Also, check for leaks,especially around the filter. Did I mention
to make sure it's TIGHT.

I didn't know the torque spec buts its a large bolt so I just cranked it down nice and tight. Confirm how much fluid your tranny requires then you start refilling your tranny with the engine off and when it reachs a point that you can't get it to take any more tranny fluid, then start the engine and you will now be able to get the remainder in. I thinks it's because you have to check your tranny fluid level with the engine running so the level you see on the dipstick is with the tranny pumping fluid thru itself and if you shut off the engine it would all drain back to the pan and the level would go up. When you are near full and trying to add more with the engine off the fluid level is up because the engine is off and when you try to get more in, apparently the bottom of the dipstick
tube is emmersed in fluid so what you put in just fills up the dipstick tube and won't go in.

It's easier to do than a car, allisons have a good sized drain plug and there is alot of room under there to work. just slide a big plastic tote under there and pull the plug. When refilling with fluid you will reach a point where you have to start the engine to get the rest of thefluid in. There is an internal filter and a magnet inside the pan that would reguire dropping the pan if you want to change that filter and clean the magnet.

I have found that the oil extractor I bought for our boat really helps. It is calibrated so you know how much oil you have removed andthen you have very little oil to deal with when you get under the coach.

The fluid has to circulate through the system(trans, cooler, etc),
and warm up. That's when you get to the exact amount. Remember,
the engine has to be running when checking the fluid level.

My local RV shop quoted me $179 for a tranny fluid change. This is Tom Raper RV
in Fairfield, OH.

While I am on the subject, here are some other quotes:

Cat 3208TA engine oil change with fuel filters - $325
Perkins 4.108 genny oil change with fuel filters - $85
Allison MT-643 fluids change - $179

I know you have a slightly different vintage than I do. It will give you a ball
park frame of reference.

I haven't taken my bird in for the service yet. This shop gives fixed prices
based on a diesel engine. I am still calling around for quotes. These quotes
were the best compared to Cat shops and truck shops.
