Shutting off the heat

Hi Tim,

Sadly, ye be mistaken. There's a sporlan behind the air step mechanism under
the front steps that opens (or is supposed to) when you turn on the front heat.
I can hear mine click when you rock the front heat switch- my suspicion is that
it's wired backwards and is closing when it should be opening- so when my pump
is on, the sporlan is closed- but when the pump is off- it's open. I'm willing
to bet that it has been like that since the coach was built. We're going to
troubleshoot it at the WarnerRama rally in New York later this month.

The sporlan valve is opened by a solenoid which is just an electro magnet that when energizedcreates amagnetic force that opens the water valve. The switch on the dash is a 2 wire switch and you can swap the wires around and the function of the switch does not change, it just makes or breaks the circuit. You cannot wire a 2 wire switch backwards, the only thing you could do backwards on the switch isput it into the slot on the dash facing the wrong direction so that when you have the rocker switch pushed to the off position it's really on and when you have it pushed to the on position it's really off. That is a very likely possibility of the problem, the other good possibility is the sporlan valve is stuck open, all it takes is a small amount of contaminants in the valves
diaphragm to cause it to not open or close properly.

Hot all the time, replace the sporlan and bingo, hot only when the
switch is on for heat.
On a 87-89 FC the sporlan relay is located up behind the air filter.

Hi where did you purchase a new sporlan valveand what was the cost? Also I know
that there are two wires going to the valve. One red the other white. Do you
know if the white wire goes to ground? Does the red go to the front heat switch?

Robert,

On the 87FC;
There are three Sporlan valves to control the chassis heat, Front heat has one
about the air filter. The rear chassis heat controlled by the Winter/Summer heat
switch, One on the rear driver side high above the bumper close to the floor,
another above the driver side front wheel, high near the floor hidden in a
bundle of wires and tubing. The Front valve will leak coolant , either repair
it fast or drain the coolant. No rewiring necessary order three kits & rebuild
the valves with the repair kits available from:

The rear sporlan valves in addition to controlling the heat, control the coolant
flow and the return lines so there is always hot coolant flow to and from the
Hot Water Tank.

Chances are you only have to buy a rebuild kit for the sporlan valve
we have the rebuild kits
If you want the complete valve you have to buy the valve and appropriate
solenoid (12 volt) we have those also
we also have a lot of other parts for your bird

Always order a spare Sporlan valve repair kit, It will be needed for the fresh
water fill some day, When YA least expect to have trouble with Domestic water on
a trip. This is an easy quick repair for something really important.
