87 FC 35 Generator??????

I have a 87 FC 35 and the generator will not start from any starting console.
The generator is an Onan 8.0 diesel I took the starter off and had it checked,
checked out great. I put the starter back on and it still will not start. I
then short the solenoid wire to the battery and it would start if was getting
the signal from the console. I have since taken apart the console on the
generator itself to find the Ford style starter solenoid inside and checked it
out and it works fine. The ground side of the solenoid at this point seems to
be getting the wrong signal as it should be grounding and in fact has 12 volts
to it. The switch side of the solenoid at this point has a little over 8 volts
when the starter switch is activated. The generator attempts to start as it
should operating the fuel shutoff and finally for lack of a better word times
out and either trips the DC output control or the push to reset circuit breaker.
From this can someone either tell me what to look for or if at all possible
supply me with a schematic. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bob:

We have an 88 FC with the same Gennie. I dont know if this will help but these
Onan's are famous for having bad connections from the electrical box on top of
the unit to the wire connectors. The wiring is tight on top and with the
vibrations problems occur. Sometimes just grabbing the large wire bundle and a
litle wiggle and all is good.

Bob, disconnect the white 7 pin connector on the backside of the DC control box
near top (the left control box on the DKD Onan).

Clean the pins and use a magnifying glass and check for burnt pins or bent and
misaligned pins. If necessary 'jump around' the burnt pin using the correct
guage wire and a butt connector or one of your choice. Put dielectric grease on
the connector and reassemble and ensure the connector snaps in place (may even
try a little super glue to keep connector from jiggling loose.

Could it be that a relay is not wired correctly?? sounds like you have a handel on what needs to be done. the remote starts trigger a relay that triggers the solenoids on my 94

service center in Fort Worth.
They found two bad connections in one of the cannon plugs from the control
box(the 12v to heater of glow plugs). They buypassed the cannon plug with two
wires with quick disconnects. Cost $300 but starts perfect now. I also ordered
operator and service and parts manuals from them. I could post the phone number
if you like.

You need to measure the resistance of the coil of the fuel solenoid then
divide by the incoming voltage and that will equal the amperage. Look up
Ohm's Law on the net.
