Antifreeze
Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know what the PH level should be for the antifreeze in
the
Cat. 3208? Mine has been in this engine for over 4 years, and is
showing a PH of 11 on the test strips I have. Is this to high, to low?

Thanks,

11 sure sounds high, possibly creating lots of deposits in the radiator
etc., but I really don't know as I simply go by the color-code on the
bottle with the test-strips in it. What does your test-strip bottle say
about the color?

---Jeff,
According to info. I get on the internet a PH of 11 would be acid. A
Ph of 7 would be neutral, and any PH below a 7 would Alkaline. I do
have a quart of CAT coolant additive that is very alkaline, but I
don't know what the PH value should be. Better get to the local Cat
dealer I guess.

Cat tests coolant samples for about $15. They supply sample bottles
just like the oil test bottles. The test analysis printout covers
multiple properties and advises recommended levels, required additives
and whether to replace the coolant.

The explanation on the back of the printout states:

For ELC (extended life coolant?) pH minimum is 7.0, maximum is 10.0,
recommended is 7.5-9.5 with ideal 8.5.

For DEAC (?) pH minimum is 8.5, maximum is 11.0, recommended is
8.5-10.5 with ideal 9.5.

With level too low ferrous metals and solder will be attacked and with
level too high aluminum will be attacked.

You're operating with bad information. pH below 7 is acidic, pH above 7 is
alkaline. The further away from 7, the more {acidic, alkaline} it is.

Antifreeze
on my trip out to az I started to use a lot of antifreez. Any one have
any suggestion to where to antifreez could be going? I check for leaks
and don't find one. Could it be going into the oil? Does anyone know
where I can get my oil checked in AZ? We had a new engine put in five
years ago and now this started to happen.

Unfortunately: The coolant has to be going somewhere. How has your
temp. been running? Has it blown out of the expansion tank? Is your
radiator cap not holding pressure? Are you using the correct coolant
and is it ph balanced with additive? Check your oil stick and see if
there is any frothy white on the stick. This would definitely
indicate it was in the oil. If you are anywhere near a Speedco Truck
Lube Center, take it there and let them do an oil analysis on the
spot. Let us know what you discover.

Joe, check the oil for anti-freeze; there are a number of ways that it can get
in the oil. Smell the dip stick and see if you detect anti-freeeze; better
still you can put a bit of oil on your finger and taste it. You will taste the
anti-freeze if it is there--I did not say swallow you notice. I had this
experience with a 85 Detroit and it was a head gasket leaking. If you don't find
my idea pallatable, oil test is only other answer.

Joe, did you check the Trans fluid? If you find any milkey or foamy
fluid, put the bus on a flatbed for a flush and a new transcooler.
ALso run the chassis heat and look for a leak at the cockpit or lines
leading to the cockpit heater core. If you have a pinhole in a hose
that is directed at the exhaust or turbo you will smell a sweet oder in
the engine bay at high RPM's. I hope it is a simple fix

I have antifreeze in my oil. How did it get there?? If it is a head
gasket, what head could it be? Symptons?? Could it be the oil cooler?
How can you tell? or could it be a cylinder gasket? How can one
pinpoint the leak of antifreeze into the engine?
I would like some input before I take it into a garage so I don't get
taken down the pee patch.
I live in northern Indiana and would like a good honest garage in or
around the area.
