shock absorbers

I have a 1983 fc-35, don't know if i need shocks or not coach has
about 80,000 miles on it and wouldDoes the old test apply? if one sees
oil its bad, if i can move it by hand i would also assume its bad, any
other tips?, i have dirt driveway with several rough spots and she
wallows back and forth. I will check the hard bar from body to axle
before checking the shocks. finally what shock do i buy, i don'texpect
these folks around here to have much knowledge.

The shocks are Koni 90-2497SP1 available from BB. Use the procedure
at http://www.koni-na.com/adjustment.cfm for the 90 series and you
will probably find that your shocks are still fine. Clean them up and
reinstall them. They are probably the older version and will need new
rubber bumpers which I believe Ralph Fullenwider has.

Last weekend, Steve Gureasko and with a little help from me, removed both
front Koni's on my pt. Found out that one of them could be adjusted firmer, but
the other shock was toast. Lucky for me, Steve had replced his Konis and I
was the recipient of one of the discards. What a difference in ride and
handling just adjusted shocks make. We drove on I-10 to the rally and in places
the
road seemed almost non-existant. My DOA shock showed no sign of leakage and
the rubber grommetts were intact. If your ride and handling is giving you a
lot of fatigue at the end of your ride, shocks may be the culprit. Ernie

FWIW, When I was going thru this on my Bird, I has a long conversation
with the factory engineer at Koni. He told me that a small amount of
oil on the shock was perfectly acceptable since some was used to
lubricate the seals. If it was "running" down the shock, then that was
a problem. That was different from what I had been taught in years
past - but things do change. I really loved those Koni shocks.

the Bird (3208 250T CAT)is a wild ride with the rocking back and forth. I hope
this is not normal! Does anyone know what a replacement shock would be? And
where would one go to get one?

Wonderful news! How does on go about this? Do you undo the bottom and rotate the shaft, clockwise from the bottom to stiffen and counter clockwise from the bottom to weaken? If your rear shocks are original, they are shot and are not adjustable. I
tightened my front shocks about 1/2 turn from full stiff and replaced the rear
shocks with much improvement.
