This might help:

"AFTER OVERHAUL OR CHANGE INTERVALS

Fill the axle assembly to the bottom of housing fill hole as

shown in the illustration below. It is recommended that

following an overhaul, each side of the axle be jacked up

seperately to approximately six inches and held into

position for one minute. This procedure will allow

adequate lubricant to flow into the wheel ends and help

eliminate the possibility of premature damage to wheel

bearings and seals. Lower the vehicle to the floor and

allow ten minutes for lube to return to normal level. Check

and refill assembly to bottom of fill hole to replace the

lubricant that was directed into the wheel ends."

Towing
Anyone towing a Dodge Ram 2500 quad cab 4x4 8' bed diesel PU or similar type
vehicle 4 wheels down? Weighs in at 6000 lbs empty, has been set up to for
towing using Roadmaster towbar rated at over 8ooo lbs. Was originally intended
to be towed by 2004 Winnebago Journey 32' diesel pusher, a task Winnebago sales
people gauranteed was capable of. Winnebago is too short, too light and Dodge
too heavy, steering too stiff, result an unsafe combination. Are any 3-axel 40'
Bluebird diesel pushers safely capable of such a task?

In a word: Yes. Especially with the 8V92 or Series 60.

Keep the rear view camera on so you know it is back there. Don't know about
your specific model, but many of our members tow Jeep Grand Cherokees,
Suburbans, Hummers, or large trailers. One of our Lone Star Bird members
regularly towed a 24 foot enclosed trailer with race car, spare parts, golf
cart, etc. (~10k lbs) with no problems. Ernie towed a 1-ton(?) work van full of
tools, on a trailer, with his 6V92 PT40, so the weight is not a problem. The
hitch receiver assembly on the Birds is 10,000 lb rated as I recall.

It is not just the PT models that are capable of this. Many of our FC members
are pulling some pretty stout loads. Ralph pulled a 24' enclosed trailer all
over the country with his.

Welcome to the forum and happy hunting for a Bird. Please sign your posts so we
know who we are chatting with.

Stuart, I frequently pulled a skidloader and alot of equipment on a double axle trailer. The total trailer and load weighed in at about10,000 pounds and I had a 1985 Wanderlodge PT40. The coach handled it with ease and other than seeingthe trailerin the camera and in the mirrors I could not tell it was back there. I now have a 1996 Wanderlodge PT42 and plan on pulling a Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 quad cab with a short box and based on my previous heavy load towing experience with a Wanderlodge, I think it will be just fine.
Good Luck

I know of quite a few that tow some heavy loads behind their pushers- like me. I tow a 1 ton van full of tools on a flatbed car hauler. My coach is rated at 10,000 pounds and I'm close to that. Mike Kane tows his 1 ton Chevy pickup 4 down.

Ernie,

Is your towing setup the "factory setup" or did you have it altered? I'm just
wondering because the owners manual/documents for m 82 list the towing rated at
7500 lbs, not 10,000 lbs. I realize they could have upgraded it from one year
to the next, but that would surprise me a little considering 83 was only the
second year of the pushers.

Towing
Markus, I believe it was factory. When Ron Marabitos coach caught fire last year, the towing company brought it to the field beside my place. It sat there a few days till a towing company with the Landall showed up. The tow truck hooked a cable on the hitch and backed the coach- 48,000 pounds on grass out of the field and onto the Landall. Now, if those hitches are just rated 10,000 how come the operator could do that without damaging the hitch? So I bet you are good to go in whatever you want to tow. Better yet, upload a picture on that hitch for us.

Towing
Markus,

82/83 was before they started putting receiver assemblies on the Birds. I think
the actual platform hitch assembly was the same on both as I recall. Could be
that the load rating difference you are reporting be related to the fact that
the 82PT had the 6V92 "Red" engine rated at 300HP and the 83 PT had the 6V92
"Silver: at 330HP (and more torque).

Could very well be. I don't have the coach here to look at it myself, but the
pics I have do make it look more like a "bumper hitch", than the true
receiver/tubular style hitch. I'll know better in a few weeks when I can get up
close and personal with it.

You are right though, mine is the "red" engine from what I can tell in the
documentation, although I've been told its "tweaked" and puts out more than
300hp, something I will never verify or care to have verified!
