RV Update #126
April 17, 2010
I know you’re all dying for an update on the Today show feature, so here it is. Due to Jane Pauley’s hectic schedule, we had to move the interview up to this past week. Her crew flew in on Tuesday and spent two days scoping out locations in the RV park and setting up lights and cameras in preparation for the action.
I, of course, spent two days going through my closet figuring out what to wear and washing and ironing my final choice. The producer took one look at it and tactfully said, “Let’s go shopping.” So we spent the better part of a day going from to Wal-Mart, to K-Mart, to Marshall’s, to Target, to TJ Maxx trying on tops, and if you know me at all, you will realize how much of a sacrifice this was. But we finally found something that fit her requirements that I would wear, and I got a new shirt out of the deal. If only we had been within driving distance of Saks Fifth Avenue (or Cabela’s).
Jane arrived on Thursday morning in a chauffer-driven Lincoln Town Car – but that was her only trapping of fame. She is actually a pretty down to earth person, very friendly, and no attitude. She does her own hair and makeup – they hired a local gal to do mine (whose earrings Jane had to borrow because she had forgotten her gold ones) – and uses a Mac and an I-Phone. She is very easy to talk to, and we spent some time getting to know each other on the set before they actually started shooting. By the time the cameras started rolling, I was totally comfortable talking with her and, except for the hot lights, interruptions, set direction and periodic makeup adjustments, I almost forgot I was being filmed. Almost.
After the interview, we broke for lunch (Jane had pizza and I had a salad – where is the justice?), and they filmed us fishing (she didn’t know how – Lisa had to give her a lesson), walking around the RV park, and getting in and out of the bus. Then the whole crew – camera guy, sound guy, producer, gofer, Jane, and me -- piled into the RV and we went for a drive. Well, I drove and Jane sat in the passenger seat and asked me a bunch of questions. Let me tell you, it is not easy to drive a 40-foot bus down the road at 50 miles an hour with a camera in your face.
During the course of the day there were several wardrobe changes and bathroom breaks, all of which took place in the bus. Oh my God, Oh my God! Jane Pauley actually peed in our toilet! And I had to show her how it worked – Oh my God!
And that was it. When we got back from our little road trip, Jane left in her limo and the crew packed up everything and went back to Tucson to catch their flights. I was tired and felt kind of let down – I really got used to being the center of attention all day, and hated to have it end. So Lisa and I went out to dinner, had a few drinks, and came home and went to bed. So much for my second 15 minutes of fame.
Next week, yet another camera crew is flying out to film our trip to Las Vegas. Three guys, two dachshunds and us on the road to Sin City – sounds like a movie to me! Don’t worry – you’ll get all the detes. And, don’t forget to watch the Today Show, Tuesday morning, June 8, on NBC.
OK – a few autographs.
