Update on Check Engine Light, Warning Buzzer, Coach Loses Power 1993 WLWB

Howdy, Y'all.

Here is an update on our 1993 Bird's situation.

While our coach was at the doctors', a discovery was made. One of the alternators is NOT connected to anything!! And as far as we know, it was that way when we bought the coach!! This is the alternator that is at the back of the engine, the one that is accessible through the bedroom floor. The output wire is just wrapped up with electrical tape. So-o-o, Jack is looking for an alternator shop to check out that alternator. He suspects that it is kaput. 


Parts that were replaced: 

ELEC SYS ENG SENSOR TIMING SYNC TRS SRS , (photo attached.)


Camshaft seal replaced.


However, no change in the original symptoms.


And the investigation for the cause of our Bird's symptoms continues. And we are still in Texas. :-(

Hey Liz,

FYI, you hit the wrong parenthesis key on your emoticon; your "still in Texas"
should have a smiley face after it! LOL! Getting too hot for you guys already
and looking to head to the mountains? Are you getting pounded in the recent
rains?

Given that alt under the bed is the hard one to change out, I suspect the prior
owner disconnected the wire when the voltage regulator shorted out and gave him
run away voltage output readings. Don't ask how I know that! :^) If you need
a name on an alt re-builder, I can get you a name in NW San Antonio that has
done several for me, but these days I found it is actually cheaper to just get a
new Delco at Ogburn's Truck Parts. That one under the bed has gone out twice on
me so far. Same on my 1983 PT. My theory is there's too much heat trapped in
there for them to survive.

Where did you have the other repairs done on the 8V92? Always good to have a
name for that stuff.

Howdy, Mike.
Yes, we want to get out of the Texas heat.
We've had some gully washers in the last 2 days. Hope they recharge the water supply.

Thanks for the info on alternators. I wonder how many BB owners have changed that one out and how many times.

We have used Seguin Diesel now for 5 years. Clyde and his son Carl have really made a good effort to solve these latest problems. I refuse to travel in the coach until the engine stumbling problem is solved. I don't think that it is safe anymore with that going on. We may just have to turn this Wanderlodge into a park trailer and get a much smaller, economical RV to travel in. :-(

Liz, I would get the alternator fixed and try it. Low voltage/amps can cause
lots of problems. I had an alt go out on my 89 and it did make a difference bit

Jack did get that alternator out today. WHAT A JOB!! Blood sacrifices were involved.
Yeah, he wants to get it fixed. We know that it is a Delco-Remy but no part number.

Liz: I've been running with only one alternator working for more than a year.
The second alternator is just redundancy of the Wanderlodge. Nice to have
working, but only if the other one goes out.

The alternators are a very run-of-the-mill truck item. 555, or "triple nickel"
as they are often called. Look for Leece Neville 110-555JHO. They come in PHO
(Pad) and JHO (J-180) versions and you need the J.

Our '90 was originally equipped with a 160-amp at the tail and a 135-amp under
the bed. I replaced both a few years ago with 160s, at less than $200 each new.

I suspect the original was LN, but it doesn't really matter. The alternator is a
generic part where any brand will do.
