RE: Down-draft radiator fan failure
Hi M.R.,
Fantastic news that you got the motor and that it is a 100% identical replacement. My original motor had oiling ports like the ones you've shown. My replacement motor doesn't - it's lubed for life. Yes, it sounds like the motor was installed upside down - ideally I think you'd want to see the oiling ports at the top. Getting to the inner oiling port once it's installed is difficult and probably impossible if mounted with it facing downward. david brady, '02 Wanderlodge LXi 'Smokey' (Sold), '04 Prevost H3 Vantare 'SpongeBob' "I don't like being wrong, but I really hate being right" |

Sorry for the delay in answering, but computer crashed yesterday(year and half old), so this is the replacement(different brand).
And to answer the question, yes my oiling ports look like that. Steve Gureasko 90 WBSA "Jus Chillin" Ponchatoula, La. |

RE: Down-draft radiator fan failure
When reassembling the squirrel cage today, I compared the radial and axial play in the shafts and the 'feel' of the rotational resistance. There was similar and noticeable axial (end) play in both the new and old motors. Rotational resistance was also similar. (Spinning the shaft by hand gave similar number of rotations.) However, the old motor had considerable radial play in the shaft, while the new one had none.
I also found marks on the housing suggesting the motor was previously mounted with three legs rather than the current four. This ties in with the 'slice' in the housing apparently caused by the blower contacting the fan shroud. --M.R.Kane 1987 PT40 'Sleipnir' currently Iron River, MI |

Good finding. At least now, you have to worry about it. And it should last a lot longer than the previous one.
