Series 60 Exhaust Tube Warning
İmage İmage

Our newbee picked up his '99 LXi and stopped by. We discovered soot at the back of the engine compartment and the insulation partly burned away. This can mean only one thing. A long rod with mirror attached, plus a strong flashlight verified a hole in the exhaust tube in the turn after the turbo.

This place is very difficult to see even with the effort above, but considering that if he had pulled a load and a long hill, a fire would have resulted, it seems vital that everyone get very good at inspecting that area.

Quite frankly, with the size of the hole, I am surprised there wasn't a catastrophe. Man, did I ever jump on mine and inspect!

RE: Series 60 Exhaust Tube Warning
To whom am I answering? Who are you, Arcticdude?

The '98 and later have a lower engine allowing a skinny guy to do it if the air induction tube is dropped and the exhaust tubes removed. There is a trap door in the bedroom floor that makes it easy, but on this model Blue Bird built rear closet walls over the door, making it unusable.

On my '95 I did the job myself. The engine was higher, but no trap door. It was very difficult reaching the turbo clamp from the underside, but possible. You probably need to do the entire exhaust system if this one piece is damaged. When it is done, not having to worry about that hidden issue is a great feeling. My logic is that if I am likely to have to do it while I own the bus, do it now and eliminate the worry.
