I guess my coach's air throttle will lag when i switch it to high idle.
Maybe it cuts in at a certain air pressure? ernie- 83pt40 in montana- snow above 5000 feet. I'm at 4500- time to go home if it gets lower [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Good morning everyone:
Well the grass is cut, edges all trimmed and weed eater put away on this beautiful Sunday morning. What say we start and education thread? Here is a topic seldom touched upon and can benefit all of us in one way or another. Anyone had much to do with the air throttle system, high idle system and electronic shifter found on the PT's and some FC's? Come on PT owner's jump on this one and lets find out how they work, where the components are located and how to adjust them. Many of the air throttles seem to have a little greater lag than others. What is sticking, and wehre is it? Safe travels, Ralph and Charolette Fullenwider Ralph's RV Solutions, Duncan, Oklahoma http://home.swbell.net/rlf47/index.htm |

Ralph,
This is a good subject,I wish I had more knowledge about it. The only experience I can relate to is the DD pro driver on few occasions has given me a warning message that there was a TPS problem and the cruise would shut off. I don't think I have a lag in the throttle, but never compared it to anything else. Fred & Jeanne Hulse Morristown Arizona 1997 Wanderlodge PT41 |

Thank you Fred and Ernie:
Anyone have any info in the blue/black boxes on the air throttle, high idle circuits? Lets find out what makes these things tick. I will try to find out more info on them and post it. Just though some of the guys might have played with this, so we could all learn. Thank to those who have responded. The picture is still un clear to me
anyway, as to how the system works. I know that the high idle is part of the air throttle system and when switched on at the dash, it opens a solenoid and a metered amount of air brings the idle to 1000 RPM's give or take. And when the high idle switch is on, there is no response form the throttle pedal. So I can only conclude that the air from both, the foot throttle and the high idle goes to the same solenoid and is selectable via the switch. There should be a transducer for the Allison as well that ties into this circuit and that there has to be a transducer at the throttle on the 6v92 and 8v92. I have always assumed it was the silver looking cylinder about as big around as your thumb and 5 to 6 inches long, located on the left side of the throttle area. I have heard that the pin from this transducer/cylinder can wear to the point of not pushing the bell crank on the inside of that same area, but again this is purely speculative on my part. So all in all, we still know, not very much about the system. Anyone know who makes the air throttle on the Birds? If anyone has information to contribute regarding the air throtttle,
its components and how they function, I would appreciate hearing about it. My high idle is set at 1,350 rpm. I ant to slow it to 1,000 rpm but don't know what or where to adjust it. A typed description is nice, but a picture of the component would help tremendously! This thread was started by Ralph, it wasn't finished(IMO) when it faded away. Least I can't find the info I need. adjustment for the high idle.the best i remember (its been years)you need a 9/16 wrench to adjust it. looking into your engine compartment, above the fuel filter on top of the engine you will see..jay,i have an 86 pt40 here for sme repairs, let me look at that part tomorrow so i can give you a better discription,i need a refresher on it! BUT,before you go adjusting anything replace the throttle return springs where the throttle cable connects on top of the engine at the rear, you need 3 springs, anything less will result in high fast idle speeds,no kidding.. randy dupree 93wb 84fc for sale > > If anyone has information to contribute regarding the air throtttle, > its components and how they function, I would appreciate hearing > about it. > > My high idle is set at 1,350 rpm. Good morning Jay and everyone:
The high idle transducer is located, as your looking at the engine, on the left up high and is a round cylinder. This is adjusted with the jam nut on the front of the cylinder. The push rod of the cylinder pushes on a bell crank type of clevis to set the high idle. This clevis can and does wear over time as does the end of the push rod. Adjust it out 1/8th of a turn at a time, then try it. In the earlier post on this subject, I simply gave the sequence of operation and air flows as well as where they came from and went to and what controlled what. The air throttle sluggishness was the main theme of that post. The high idle switch actually opens a valve about just forward of mid way of the Coach up inside the frame and that is where the air comes from for that transducer on the engine. Hope this helps a little, I don't have any photos of it. Thanks Randy & Ralph!
Randy, I have updated tthe return springs using 2 springs with, what seems to me, have an awful lot of return pressure. I thought the old dual springs were contributing to my somewhat sluggish throttle response, so removed one. Learned real quick when I then engaged the high idle and it headed straight for Wide Open Throttle, that you need the 2 return springs. Seems this places quit a strain on things having some much spring pressure..? Ralph, I still don't find the transducer. Only thing I see is a throttle cable coming from the cruise control board of crap. Pictures anyone? Sure would like to slow down the high idle a bit. Randy, I will add a 3rd return spring to see if it slows the high idle as I know how and where to do that. Thanks to both of you again! have here, its not a jake brake model and the high idle adjustment is different from what i was thinking.does yours have a engine jake brake? randy > > Thanks Randy & Ralph! > > Randy, I have updated tthe return springs using 2 springs with, what > seems to me, have an awful lot of return pressure. > > I thought the old dual springs were contributing to my somewhat > sluggish throttle response, so removed one.
