Fuel Filter & Pump
Hi All------I was wandering if the SP 36' Coach has a pump to fill the fuel
filter at the engine? The last couple times I have been filling it with
clean diesel fuel before I screwed it on. I know that is not the best way to do
it. My 79 FC has a hand pump at the filter & it is easy to fill & get the air
out. If they don't have one can you put one on & where would it be installed?
Or how does everyone else fill there fuel filter?

Fuel Filter & Pump
Hi Don,

I think we have the same 300 hp Cat. in our 88 FC.
No hand pump, The Facet electric fuel pump at the rear fuel tank is
energized by an oil pressure switch. The switch is located at the
oil filters at a T connection with the oil pressure sensor switch.
I turn the ignition switch to ON, then jumper this fuel pump switch.
Screw on the fuel filter, keep it loose and wait until the fuel
fills the filter and spills over . Then tighten the fuel filter.
The Cat will then start, no need to bleed fuel at the injectors.

I think the Facet fuel pump also runs with the Onan.
But I have not used this method to fill the Cat fuel filter,
The Onan is to noisey in the rear to hear the Facet pump chatter.

Fuel is at least filtered by the Racor, This works for me.

Don, on my coach there is no hand pump. I fill the fuel filter manually and
then screw it on. Ernie-83pt40 in montana- till nov 1

Thanks Bill Hank & Ernie I don't know why Bluebird didn't make a way to
prime the filters after you put them on. Do most people fill them before
screwing them on? If they do I guess I'll continue to do that if I can't
figure
out the way you do it Bill by jumper the Facet fuel pump.

Hey Don, a couple of great responses to your question. Let me throw
in a couple of comments as well.

In a pinch and actually when changing the fuel filters what I do is
is use transmission fluid to fill the filter then start the main
engine. My Mechanic (who also reubilds injectors etc) has assured me
that this does not hinder the motor whatsoever and actually lubes the
injector pump. Since I carry some tranny fluid with me it works for
the roadside filter change as well.

In line with Bill's post I as well have a facet pump for the fuel
tank. (86FC) It actually became an issue on the new genny install
recently. The fuel line for the genset is actually "T"'d into the
main fuel line. We wired it to 12v from the genset when the genny
runs as well so that the fuel pump on the new PowerTech genny could
work properly. Now it runs when the genset is running so this could
fill the filter as well.. Just my .02 worth...

Scott That sounds like it would work but I guess you would have to have
the fuel filter cracked to let the air out.

Hank, we had snow above 5000 feet. Currently, I'm parked at 4500. I can see
the snow on the mountains and hopefully it will stay up high till I GET OUT OF
HERE! Ernie 83pt40 in montana

Fuel Filter & Pump
The 352046 print, entitled; "Diagram, Master Wiring, Chassis", shows a
change dated 5/89 that adds a fuel prime pump and switches in the SP.
It consists of a facet pump, a push button mounted in the rear
ignition switch control box and a oil pressure sensor.

The facet pump is wired into the battery terminal of the ignition
switch so it always has power. Pushing the button switch connects the
facet pump to ground and it pumps fuel into the engine.

You push the button switch to fill the fuel filter after opening the
petcock on the fuel injection pump and then run the facet pump until
all the air is discharged. That petcock is shown in the files section
of the other group:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/wanderlodge/files/

in the folder entitled: "3208Fuel&Governor".

The oil pressure sensor is, I believe, normally open and closes when
it senses 3 or 5 psi (am not sure which) at which time it connects the
facet pump to ground. If the engine is not running there is no
pressure and the Facet pump does not run. The purpose of this, as I
understand it, is to keep the engine primed.

Excerpts from the 352046 print are now posted in the file section
here, entitled "SP Fuel Prime Pump".

It is my understanding from posts on the forums that filling a fuel
filter has the risk of getting contaminants into the fuel injection
pump which has tight tolerances.
