Hard Starting 1980 Kohler Generator
My generator does not start at around 55 degrees or lower. If it is
warm, the gen cranks right up. This model does not have glow plugs. If I plug in a 110 volt radiator heater, the gen starts right up after a couple of hours. Is this normal for this generator? If not, any recommendations on a fix? All fluids and filters are new, and injectors rebuilt summer before last. Related to this, has anyone used a propane engine heater? Or some 12 volt engine heating system to help starting in cold weather? Tks, SDF Boulder 80FC35 |

Are you sure you dont have glow plugs? My 1982 Perkins does. You
might want to check closer. They are on the side closest to the passenger. Then if everything else is working alright ie; it starts fine in warm
weather then you might want to add a cold weather starting kit to it. Its actually a cannister of ether that automatically injects into the intake port. CAUTION! Spraying ether is alright for starting diesels but do not
just spray some in the intake manifold and THEN crank it. Wait until it starts turning over and then spray a little into the intake. If you just spray it in before starting to crank it, its possible to bend a rod or worse. The ether needs to be sucked in at the correct time.Ether is very volatile and literally explodes in the combustion chamber. Hard Starting 1980 Kohler Generator
Gentlemen,
My last Wanderlodge was an '81 31' with the 12.5 kw Kohler diesel genset with a Perkins engine and it had a single glow plug in the throat of the intake. When preheated it would squirt a small amount of diesel into the intake and ignite it going into the cylinders when start was attempted. The pre-heat was activated by holding the stop switch down for about 15 to 30 seconds. My point is there are not glow "plugs" but a single heater in the air intake. Richard my Perkings has 4 glow plugs. and when you hold the start
switch down it activates them. I have never heard of a single glow plug in an intake ever. How was the small amount of diesel "squirted" into the intake?
