2005 Newell at Motorhomes of Texas

ok, michael day is much better when thing started than i.

there are different generations of newell body style. from 1990 to 1999 or so was the model 2000

in 2000 they started with a different headlight on the front cap

slides started in 1997

in 2000 they started with the bode air entrance door (i have it and it is really slick)

in 2005 they went to the 2000i model and in 2006 the P2000i.

each had body style changes.

mid 2003 they started with the valid electric slides

mid 2004 they went with the steerable tag.

but since each coach was custom built things jump around a little.

we go by year and coach number.

i have an air pocket door entering into the bedroom and also another for the rear bath.

when we were on a month long trip with our daughter and 2 grandkids, the grandkids spent a lot of time on the rear bed watching movies while i was motoring.

with mine....i made the bed a cal king size (just a little bit shorter, but not much) and with the slide retracted, it is not hardly any room to walk around it. however, that is not normal because mine was built such that the cabinets prevent it, not space between the bed and the wall.

most allow room to walk at the end of the bed when the slide is retracted.

i added a few pictures of mine so you could see some of those things. it is not as elegant as that 2005 we are referring to, but it shows a few of the things including the desk in place of the dinette.

btw, the curved entrance steps can go to the left or the right. i have seen both. it depends on the config of the living area. mine curve to the left as you are entering. why curved steps you ask? a couple of reasons. the first is they look really cool. the second is it allows to put in an extra step with enough depth on it to make the walk in much easier. the steps that go straight in have one less step and are in my opinion a little harder to walk up because the steps themselves are taller. if you added another step in the ones that go straight, then they are either not deep enough or extend half way into the coach. mine do not get in the way at all. mine are granite covered as well and are open.

this only applies to the mid entry coaches. the newer ones that have the front entry are not the same.

a picture is worth a thousand words. on mine you cant see all the granite because i have black carpet runner strips on them to give some traction.

there was an earlier question about optimum years for the detroit series 60. i am no expert live mr brady, but will say a few things to spark a discussion.

btw, newell started using cat engines as early as 2003 that i am aware of (one of our gurus has a 2003 with a 500hp cat).

for me there were several big advances in the series 60. i could have the dates not quite right but i think i am close.

most of our coaches have a ddec 3 or 4 and a 12.7litre engine. in 2002 they moved to an engine with more smog controls (EGR). fortunately, mine does not have that.

then they moved to a 14Litre engine in 2001/2 my 2002 newell was made in 2001 and has the 12.7L.

the ddec 4 engine added a wastegate turbocharger and increased the HP to 500 (which is what mine is)

so, what is optimum is a personal preference. with or without egr, 12.7L or 14L. DDEC 3 or 4. at some point detroit stopped making engines for coaches. CAT was the preference and had all the emissions controls that were required.

tranny is another thing. most have the allison 6 speed. somewhere in there newell started using the 12 speed ZF transmission and then i think went back to a 6 speed. i dont think most motorcoach owners liked the tranny shifting so much.

the other thing is the belt config and alternator. it depended on which place newell ordered the engine from as to what belts and pullys. and the owner would decide on the alternator. mine was a race rig so it has the humongo trailer hitch and oil cooled alternator. i also have a serpentine belt for the alternator. but the air conditioning compressor has two side by side V belts. others i have seen have no serpentine etc....

oh well, if i drag on too much just tell me. these things above are the same for the similar vintage wanderlodges i would guess.

david knows alot more about these things than i do.

1994 models began offering Series 60 mid-year

2004-2005 began offering Caterpillar C12/C13

2006 Caterpillar C15 standard engine, Detroit Series 60 available at customers request

2010 models Cummins ISX650 with Caterpillar C15 discontinued

Thanks Tom, very informative! Sorry about the delayed response........... it's bike week here and every year the cell towers get slammed and I can't hardly get on!!!!!!!! Saw your post on Newell guru's.......your pal IS a MASTER Craftsman... nice job!!!!!

SUPER TIGHT is fine,climbing over beds to hit the head, etc, cool no worries..... but can the BED be down with the slides retracted in the aft cabin. Although one never pictures yourself in a Walmart or rest area with this kind of rig there are times it makes sense. My lovely wife made an outstanding point as well. What if you want to leave at the crack of dawn and unhook and pack up, slides, etc. the night before???? Now That, I have done MANY times!Big Grin Old Men like me have poor night vision so on long days I prefer to leave early before dawn, get in early and go to happy hour even earlier! :=), :-0........
