gen. door, radiator....

Mike
I got the genset slide to come out partway, can see better. Not sure
why it won't come out further but that's another project. Do I remove
the fan shroud from the radiator, duh?! I'm going to try to take the
hose off the water pump.
Wish I had taken time to learn some mechanics from my dad and
brothers when they were around....

Mike,
the radiator sits to the left of the engine. Have the top two bolts
removed from the shroud, the bottom 2 are really going to be a time,
they are sitting up in a groove where a wrench can't get and so far
haven't found the right size extension to be able to use a 7/16
socket, I'll get it figured... going by braille I have managed to
reach the one on the left, the right is still a reach as I haven't
the bottom hose loose yet. I can see the screw on the hose clamp but
can't quite get to it. Hoping if I get the shroud loose I will be
able to reach it.
I think I am beginning to understand where the term 'monkey wrench'
came from, I think I could use their dexterity to reach and
manipulate some of these things! or is it from the way you hold your
mouth and make sounds when trying to reach and use the wrench?! Also
the term grease monkey, my hands have more grease than removing a few
bolts should produce!
How in the world does one reach to everything to reattach....ha!?
(another dumb question, the bottom screws which reach up through the
shroud, once I get ahold of them, do I still turn counter to loosen?
Don't think real well standing on my head....!

Rose Mary,

You're making good headway! Nothing magic to this one, just grunt work.

Braille method is an excellent description of reaching those bottom
bolts and screws. I seem to remember some bolts that took barely an
8th to 16th of a turn at a time with a wrench to get them off. Sounds
like you only have one more to go. Once you get the fan shroud loose,
I believe on your 82 that it is a two piece assembly with two or three
bolts/screws that hold the two major halves together. If you take
those off, you can then get the fan shroud totally out of your way for
the rest of the project. Reference the picture I sent you offline.

Yes, counter clockwise to loosen. Or as my wife says: righty-tighty;
lefty-loosey!

Gee, you're almost done getting it apart! You know Steve made you a
REAL nice offer for help at the rally. If you don't get totally done
before then, maybe you can bring the repaired parts and get help
putting it back together at the rally. Committee repairs are always
fun events on Bluebirds! It's the stuff that future rally stories are
built from.

Mike,
got the shroud & radiator loose except for the one bolt on the bottom
right of the shroud....reckon I need another pair of hands to hold
the radiator at the right angle so I can reach it (you're right, just
small part turns once I get ahold of it...)
Wish indeed I could have it apart & radiator fixed so I could take it
to the rally ..with extra hands to put it back together, with
everything loose as it is now the bird won't be going anywhere...rats.
Maybe tomorrow I will be able to get that last bolt loose so I can
get the radiator to the shop....
it is always an adventure...
