blowing out the bottom like a newer style gen set..

might be the deal for us fc owners..i like it

I still need the gen set troubleshootsing instructions and other books
on this and my 81 bird
mine had a 1980 model book and a gas engine book?

Woody I think you are going to be very sorry you changed the orientation of
your radiator for two reasons. Now when it kicks on it will blow every kind
of dust and stones not only all around the bottom of the coach but also
back up into your radiator. The Bluebird engineers put the radiator
horizontally for this very reason. If you insulate the compartment with the
right kind of space age insulation (lined with lead for a diesel) and
install a quieter muffler you will have licked the noise problem.

The genset compartment change that Woody made is how all the
late-80/early-90 model PTs have their genset radiators (not sure on
the newer models). The genset rads are laying down on the front
driver's side compartment floor and blowing outward. I haven't read
of the PTs having any problems with radiator damage. Woody's
compartment re-do seems like a great idea.

Ijust sent woody some insulation to reinsulate his generator
Compartment but insulation is not going to stop the noise from moving
the air around
I think that woody has a great idea by reorienting the fan so it blows
under the coach and not out under the awning area
he also wrote me that he is going to add a duct to further direct the
air from the underside of the coach to the street side

I know my FC was really noisy. It was the fan that was the culprit. On my
PT, I have a belt driven fan- which is still noisy, even though the
compartment is well insulated. I'd like to be able to relocate the radiator- but
I'm
technically challenged- so I'll just park down wind from everyone. Ernie-83pt40

Tom, it's OK, it's not relevant to an 82 NA. Mebbe you aren't picking up on the
cooling air flow direction. The best of us get confused.

If you insulate the compartment with the
right kind of space age insulation (lined with lead for a diesel) and
install a quieter muffler you will have licked the noise problem.

gen set/books needed
The airflow direction on my Perkings generator is to the outside, in other
words the fan blows it through the radiator. After correctly insulating it,
there is very little noise. Also I ave never noticed a problem with the
awning down. The problem is that most people use the wrong kind of
insulation in the generator compartment. To tame down the noises made by
diesels you should use a composit of 2 #/sq ft of lead lined insulation,
not vinyl lined. The only company that I know that offers this kind of
insulation is Soundown corp.

What I would worry about with a horizontal radiator like that is the
collection of dirt and debris in the fins as well as the weakening of the
generator floor. I did not see any additional members installed in the
floor after the cutouts for the radiator. The Perkins generator weighs
approx 900#.

But as always anyone can make what ever modifications to their coaches they
feel is necessary. Time will tell whether it was worth the effort.
