Landing Lights - 1993 WLWB
I followed the discussion a bit on the docking lights for a 87 WL, but I
believe my landing lights are different (not eyeball type). Both of my rear landing lights are out and I would like to replace them. They are the square headlight type of light. The light itself sits in a rubber housing with 4 corner screws which I would assume are for slight adjustments in direction of light. Then there is a painted trim piece around the entire assembly with 4 painted screws. Is there a bulb in these lights? Or does the entire light have to be replaced? Is the assembly removed by removing the the painted exterior trim piece? I don't like messing with painted screws unless I know for sure I need to. What else do I need to know to replace these lights? Brian Gatley 1993 WLWB 40 Bend, OR [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Landing Lights - 1993 WLWB
Brian there has been some good info on these lights and their replacement
recently. A search might give you what you want. In the meantime let me tell you how I removed mine. Don't mess with the painted screws. You can remove both the light and the rubber boot by removing the four screws that go through the rubber. This is what I did. I may be wrong but I think someone else just removed the light by prying it out of the rubber boot. Someone will chime in on this I'm sure. The four spring loaded screws I removed originally went into the back of the water proof plastic housing which houses both the boot and the light. The brass knurled inserts in the plastic housing were all corroded and had lost their grip in the plastic. I had to reach into the wheel well and hold the inserts with pliers to remove the screws. When I replaced the screws and brass threaded inserts I used SS nuts and bolts. I water proofed the back of each SS nut with some butyl. If I was to do it again I would ask around to see if anyone has experience at just prying the light out. The light is a sealed beam and not cheap as I recall. Took an old one to NAPA and they ordered it in for next day delivery. Hope this helps. Landing Lights - 1993 WLWB
Rob,
I looked at recent posts and the only references I could find were the following which tell me that they are sealed fixtures and there are 2 conflicting light specifications. I will be going to NAPA once I figure out the best way to remove the lights. Do you feel that you made a "mistake" the way you removed your lights? You comment that if you were to do it again you would see if someone else has had luck "prying" the lights out. When you had yours apart, did the light itself come out of the boot easily? Did the wires extend far enough to be able to disconnect them from the light? Or, do you think that ultimately the only way to get the light disconnected from the wiring was to remove the boot? Reaching up under the wheel well, I don't see that there is an easy wire disconnect. The connection seems to be inside the plastic housing, but I don't know if the connection is inside or outside of the rubber boot. Does this make sense?
