An inverter converts between DC (like a battery provides) current and
AC (like your house uses). Since generators usually produce AC
current, the inverter would provide, AC-->DC, to allow use of 12V
items/circuits (as on a boat or RV) or to charge batteries.

An inverter is also used to convert battery power, DC-->AC so that
110 v appliances can be used. This is odd-sounding in relation to a
generator set, but a more extensive check of the specifications may
explain this particular arrangement.

The inverter in the context of that Honda generator means the gas motor is
connected to a dc generator which is then changed (by the inverter) to the ac
you will use, This seems backwards, but there is a good reason for that. It
allows the gas engine to to vary its rpm (less noise and fuel usage) depending
on the load. The inverter is very stable as to voltage and frequency, P.S. a
good generator

This makes sense. This particular Honda generator can vary the RPM
depending on the load. It will run 15 hours at 25% load and 4 hours at
100% on a tank (1.1 gallon) of gas. Many RV's have the Onan 7.5KW
Quiet Diesel generator. It also has an inverter and is a variable speed.

I did a search on the http://www.rv.net forum, and yes people can run their
A/C with this generator if they are not at hi altitude and turn the
fridge to gas, turn off the hot water heater, and turn down the
amperage going to the charger. With the BB this is simple, simply
unplug the chargers.

This generator only weighs 46 pounds and is 59 db at full load. Many
5th wheelers buy 2 of these and a special adapter that connects them
togther (in phase) and has a 30 amps outlet.

Here is a very detailed comparision between the Honda, Yamaha, and
Robin inverted generators:

Here is a picture and stats:

I think the lowest price is $850 at: http://www.mayberrys.com

Hey, I've been searching the RV forums and found something better that
the Honda. It is a 2400w generator made by Yamaha. It is quiter than
the Honda and supplies more power. It was designed to run a RV A/C. It
uses the inverter technology like the Honda.

Steve,
You can setup your Bird to power your house in an emergency.
This is what we did during Hurricane Katrina after we returned to no
power and trees down everywhere. We could not power the main a/c
but was able to power the upstairs A/C 24 hours a day to keep the
house cool and we did not loose one refrig / freezer.

Our bird is at Coach Craft by MacDonald getting some updates and
hope to have back by March and you are welcome to come see it. You
will need to put a transfer switch on your house so you don't feed
back unto the lines.

Thanks for the tip. The problem is last year we had power outages in
the middle of the night, due to lightning strikes. My Bird is stored
20 min away and the yard padlocks the gate after dark.

Anyway, we will probably be selling the house in 1.5 years, as we only
bought it as an investment and that is when we will be eligable for
the $500k tax free sale. I don't want to do too many upgrade/changes
to it (I'm cheap!)

A small generator is like a truck. Once you get one, you don't know
how you lived without one:-)
