Question on SP's

This is one of the best forums I've been on. Honest up front answers,
helpful hints etc. I do have a question if someone in the know would
resond. The 36' SP was only out three years, I think, and then
discontinued. They had a 330 DD and the ZF transmission. How did this
power train combination hold up pushing a 37k GVWR bus. Most all other
BB's are Alisons. Anything to be concerned about. I know thay are all
center door entry which uses some space right where you don't want it,
but the coach looks good. Has a good layout, etc. Any comments
appreciated.

The SP had a 300 hp Cat and ZF transmission, just as the FC of that era had.

Dave,

The 36' SP's had 300hp 3208 Cat powerplants. The Cat is adequate
for most terrain but some consider it underpowered for use in the
mountains.

The ZF transmissions are quality units but qualified service is more
difficult to find than for Allisons. This topic was discussed recently

Hi Dave
We had a 91 SP36 for a while and appreciated every inch of it.
The SP36 has a 300 HP Caterpiller 3208 engine with a ZF 5 spd trans with
retarder.
The only critical thing about the SP36 was the rear radiator fins would get
clogged with oil mist from the crankcase breather and then dust and dirt
would cling to the sludge causing the reality of overheating.
This is overcome by cleaning the fins on the radiator and extending the
breather tube out past the radiator.
Regarding the power of the 3208 Cat,I always felt it was plenty adequate in
nearly all situations after the ZF trans was reprogrammed to downshift
sooner and give the driver earlier manual shifting ability.
I am a advocate of mid door so it was ideal for our use.

Dave, I like the 36sp as well as the ZF trans. The shops that work
on the trans include all the BB schoolbus shops. The prob with the
allison shops is that some are just light duty allison shops but they
will poke their nose in the big trannies for a look without knowing
what they are doing. The best thing is the length with a trailer. In
California my pt40 limits me to a 20 foot trailer (plus 5' tounge),
and I can not visit many stateparks due to length limits. I dont
like Cat but I have several 3208's in dumptrucks with over 300,000
miles.

Dave, the 36SP's were made for 4 years, 89-92. Got a significant face-lift in
'91. Lots of blue or pink interiors in '89-'90, you either love them or hate
them. There are some very good deals out there on the pink versions...
